What causes the blade to skip?

I just completed my second straight shave and the blade skipped several times. Is that a sign of poor technique?

A skipping blade is often caused by using too steep an angle. You're scrapping your beard rather then cutting it. Try laying your razor flat against your face then raise the spine a little by little until you start cutting.

Skipping is also caused by a lack of lubrication: the blade catches on a dry spot and then once you finally overcome the friction, it jumps free. Not good.

had this problem when i started out...used to think i dulled the blade, but my lather was to dry and angle too steep.

very good to know! I just have my second straight shave yesterday and I am still working out the kinks and I will shave again this morning with my straight try the advice of laying the blade flat first.
