What are your thoughts on the G5 Scuttle?

You should check out a few of the recent scuttle discussions - just do a search for scuttle and several should pop up. Most people don't think too highly of the G5, and prefer the Dirty Bird scuttles or Moss scuttles.

The G5 for sure will do the job, and its a very nice looking scuttle.

Before you make up your mind give the Dirty Bird scuttle a look. I got one, the 1.5 size, and now I don't even use my Georgetown anymore. :w00t: :001_tongu

I have a G-5 and I'll tell you this. If you are a DE shaver and are pretty fast it will do the job. If you are slow or a typical straight shaver it will not. The scuttle holds too little water and the walls are too thick. now I use the Oscar scuttle from Germany and it does the job.

I have had my G5 for about 2 months and like it but agree that the outer chamber holds very little water and the lather will cool quickly. But since I got a electric kettle that problem has been solved. The boiling water keeps my lather hot for 15 minutes - enough for 3 passes (for me at least)

The G5 may well be a case of form over function. I have the Hamada/Blue and the glaze is gorgeous. I have never tried another scuttle so I can't compare but I did read some of the older reviews with the water temps after time. I may well try a Dirty Bird at some point but the G5 works ok for me as long as I have the kettle heated water.

Looks pretty but doesn't come close to the job the DB 1.5X does. I have the G5, the Large Moss and the DB 1.5X and the G5 is a distant third.

I finally got around trying out my G5 tonight. I had received it a week ago, but I didn't have a decent water boiler which I got only today. So now I got enough boiling hot water to go with the G5 & to use in shaving. Nice!

Anyways, I put some water boiling, and while it was doing that, I rubbed some Proraso pre/after shave on my chin. Then I filled the G5, put some Castle Forbes cream (Lavender) in it and started whisking up the lather. I used my custom Rudy Vey brush (which I had soaked in hot water first) to build the lather.

This is the part where I noticed a few things. Before this, I had used a rather small, ordinary cup to build lather. Compared with that, the G5 was definitely an improvement, as you would expect. First of all, the criss-cross pattern inside the scuttle bowl makes it so much easier to whip up plenty of lush lather, the difference is quite remarkable really. Second, the larger bowl of the G5 seemed just right for my brush, and the raised edge seems to keep the lather inside the bowl very well. So all in all, it was a real pleasure to use it. I shaved with another first acquintance, a Gillette SS flaretip loaded with a Feather blade. I did two passes this time, and got no razor burn or nicks. I rinsed my face and throat with cold water, applied Osma alum, and finished with Floid Suave. Maximum enjoyment! I can't really tell whether this was more due to the new razor or the G5, I suspect both, but in any case the end result was very good, my best shave so far with DE razors. And that's what counts.:thumbup1:

I guess the most criticism the Georgetown scuttles have received is that it doesn't keep the lather warm enough. This is the first time I used any kind of scuttle, so I don't have anything to compare it against. True, it didn't feel scorching hot to the touch, but I must say the G5 keeps the lather comfortably warm, if not hot, throughout the whole shaving session and longer. I have no complaints on this department, but then I used boiling water to fill up the scuttle. But let's add the customary YMMV warning here. But I would say this is a pretty darn nice scuttle and works well too. I consider this a very welcome addition to my shaving repertoir.
