What's new

What are you drinking tonight?

Awesome! Still learning!

Today’s pour is a protest pour (as if Buffalo Trace/Sazerac cares). I found out yesterday the cost of a bottle of Weller Special Reserve has increased from $24 to $38 at my local ABC. As much as I like that bourbon, I am not quietly accepting a 58% increase!

Tonight’s pour is surely sippable, even though the bottle costs $22….$16 less than Special Reserve.

I passed on a 1.75L bottle of Maker’s Mark for $45, but it would be another acceptable replacement to teach the price gougers in Frankfort a lesson!

You were getting it for $24 til now?!?!? :w00t:

When the truck came on Tuesday, you had to be there early to get one bottle for $24 before tax. I kinda felt bad going week after week to stock up, but…. IMG_3773.jpeg
The protest continues…

Left over mead from bottling some old stuff, it's OK but not great. Added cherry juice didn't help, but I'll drink it anyway. 23 bottles of it, hope it clears nicely and stays drinkable!

Got the itch to make wine (I had three kits sitting in the livingroom wating, couple years out of date) and have to clear all the stuff in carboys from the last time I got a wild hair. Six 6 gallon kits, and my friend called me last week and said he'd not be able to process his grapes and I could have them if I wanted, so that's 9 gallons of Noiret and Cabernet Franc to deal with.

I think I'm up to 95 bottles this week, and 105 more working! Will need to clean out the racks and find room for all this, I don't like storing it in boxes particularly, since they need to be upside down to keep the corks wet, if the boxes are weak the bottle can punch through when you pick them up. Wasteful.

Also have 5 gal of wine vinegar where a batch went sour -- it's great vinegar, but 5 gal? Never gonna use that up.

I have been drinking 818 blanco tequila. I was liking it, but the internet tells me that Kendall Jenner owns the company and the reviews are along the liines of it does not have much agave flavor, is rather mild, and is not worth the premium price charged for it. Oh, well. My palate for tequila seems to not be up to snuff. I can get it locally for $31.99 a bottle, which does not seem all that premium priced. Still, I think I am willing to pay more for better. Maybe something with at least some more "heat."

I was liking La Gritona, too, but the reviews seem to pan it as beginners tequila.

London Dry Gin, my every afternoon (12-4) elixir since I retired 14 years ago. My wife's been asking me to cut back for years, but over the weekend after hearing about her out-of-state family's health issues, I heard her tell her sister that maybe gin is the solution, since I'm the only one she knows who never needs a doctor. Not a recommendation, as I'm sure it will catch up sooner or later.

I showed this post to my wife, because I love the look of that cocktail, and she said, “That’s here. Is that your picture?”

Woodford Double Oaked. I always thought this bottle had too much wood, but with a splash of water and lemon zest it was a fine sipper this evening!

I’m going to be stunned if I’m sitting at the same bar as post #1….

Wednesday evening family TV time after church activities:

1 oz — rye whiskey, Old Overholt Straight
1 oz — sweet vermouth, Cocchi di Torino
1 oz — Cynar
2 dashes — bitters, Bear Root Lemony Ginger
a squeeze — lemon juice

I was surprised to find that the Cynar faded into the background as much as it did. Not sure what I think about that. Might adjust the ratio next time to feature the Cynar a little more.

Cynar is a bold ingredient, isn't it?!
