What are the MUST HAVE DE Razors for any respectable Den? =D

Hey guys,

So I just got into using the whole art of wet shaving and I have a Merkur HD and a generic DE that I picked up from ebay.

I want to know what are the DE's that most of you have and that you think are an important part of a shave den?

What are the most popular one's that I should get my hands on so my son can benefit from them one day (I don't have a son yet btw).

What do you guys think?

The HD will always be the ultimate coming of age de shaver - for this generation. The only other razor I own is a merkur progress...which I'm having customized. After that - i'm done with buying razors. I mean, I can barely afford my aftershave / cologne addiction.

Must have some Gillette Super Speeds! I have a thing for the 50s style flare tips

For me, my favorite is the Mergress. However, I will pass on my FB and slim to my sons since I have had these razors from the time I was a lot younger. The slim dates back to 1962, the FB to 1964, and the Mergress to 2009.

All three are an important part of my shave den. They each represent a different period.

Important in what sense? If you are looking for classics then a Fat Boy would be a shoe-in. A Tech of some sort and a couple of Super Speeds including a '40's style and a flare. You'd probably want an injector or two, and what den is complete without a straight?

That should get you started, and on the road to a full on addiction.:thumbup1:

Everybodies taste differs, so there is no one right answer. I do not own a merkur, so my den itself could be called incomplete in itself.

I think a single ring is a must. This is the razor that really began the age of DE shaving. It is a classic. They can be found for reasonable money, in the $20-30 range.

Next is the NEW Improved. I think Gillette realy hit their stride here. I like the heft, the syle, the shave. These might be a bit pricier, but they are quality and should retain value.

The Tech is a classic, and can be found for under $10.00. There are lots of variations. Can you imagine how many millions of men began their day with this razor ?

As we move into the modern era, a 1940's Aristocrat is next. Closed comb, turn to open, stunning looks, a mid century marvel.

Post war brings in the adjustables, and a Fatboy is the classic here. Slim is just as valid, but does not have the cache of the fatboy.

I think these are reasonable in price and exlemplify high points in doulbe edge shaving.

Hmm, I would think:

1. Gillette Super Speed (any variety)
2. Gem 1912
3. Gem Micromatic
4. Merkur (in any form)
5. Schick Injector

My "go to" razor that I use everyday is a Merkur 1904 straight bar, all others are in storage for when the zombies come

I had to try them all out to see what worked for me.

Not sure if you meant for shaving or collecting?

For shaving, I would suggest you eventually acquire some of these

Edwin Jagger DE89L - Simply a stunningly beautiful razor that is well built.

An Open Comb razor. I like the Merkur 12C, but you may not like big and heavy razors.

A Slant Bar razor. If you're thinking of eventually giving it to your son, I would suggest going for the gold HD version.

An Adjustable. I much prefer the Futur and Gillette Slim to the Fat Boy. Slims are a lot less money than a Futur.

A Single Edge razor. Good starters are the 1912 versions, and the MicroMatics. You may want to stay away from the Open Comb MicroMatic at first, as it is very aggressive and can bite.

Gotta have a Tech in there. I still go to a Tech often. A bunch of Superspeeds are good too.
The Fat Boy is nice in the collection, but I haven't used mine in a long time.
There are better razors out there, but not so many as iconic.
I say you try as many as you can.

My first razor was the Merkur HD Barberpole. I loved it from the first shave, but then started trying out the older stuff.
A 40's Style Super Speed is ultra smooth and has timeless style.
Of course, the Fat Boy is on everyone's list, but it still takes a bit of practice. I also find that the head is so large that I have a tough time shaving under my nose! (Maybe the problem is with the size of my nose and not the razor!)

I love my New Open Comb razor too. It has a nice raw feeling and gives a great shave.

I recently added a Merkur Slant to my group and I especially like it too, but this is the one razor that I don't like with a Astra Superior Platinum. It works great with a Feather, but not my favorite Astra SE! This is definitely one to add to the collection!

I have tried other razors, but they don't make the list.
Too bad Gillette didn't ever make a slant razor!
