I mostly face lather but wanted a nice stainless silver bowl to load my brush when using creams. I keep my puck soaps in apothecary mugs(2) this gives me two types of pucks soaps to use but was having trouble loading my creams without a true bowl. I was using a small coffee mug(only thing my wife would give up from the kitchen) so I went online and they ran around 35$, not bad but then the idea hit me go to the antique store you might find a nice one for a few bucks.
So my wife who loves antics came along which I enjoy because our schedules are such sometimes we see little of each other during the week. Well I found a nice Academy Silver on Copper 640 bowl from circa 1950's thru 1960's that had some scratches on the bottom that went to the copper and it needed a real good cleaning but it is perfect and the price was great $5, it is just under 5 inches wide at the top and a perfect depth for brush work. After I decided to get the bowl even though there were nicer ones but the prices were sky high. As I walked over to the counter I noticed my wife just staring at a desk, I walked over and she said I love this desk. I looked at it and it was a great very solid desk I thought it was from the 30's or 40's but when opening the draw there was a label attached to the desk that was dated 1918 and an official label/receipt that was attached to the back of the desk from the store that sold it with the salespersons name, date and SN number Some of this was hand written. Well to say the least I saved 30$ on the bowl but spent $425 on the desk(they wanted 499$ but cash got me a 75$ discount and a few Lawrence Welk Albums for free that she also wanted. All in all a great day with my wife, when we got home she was cleaning it with Murphy's Soap and stuck inside was a BW photo that had to be from the 30's it was a lady in the Kitchen and was 2x2 very common back then with an Ice Box no fridge an Ice box plus a small newspaper clip from 1934 and some bible versus that had notes written along the sides and a date that all we could make out is June, 1927 the day numbers were to faded what a find. My wife got some archival envelopes and placed the items in the envelope and replaced them in the small draw to stay it would be a sham to separate something that might have been in the desk for 80 plus years.
Here's a few pics I will clean the bowl up better just used some Tarnex but will get some better silver polish. The desk is so rich and heavy after just cleaning the shine came right out my wife will get some proper polish from the furniture store to preserve it better since it is such a great piece and heavy too no particle board laminate in this baby.
