Has anyone had experience with thewellhonedrazor.com?

I sent a straight razor to them to be honed about three weeks ago. I have emailed and left phone messages and have yet to be contacted.

It looks like I may have been ripped off.

Advice anyone?

I have dealt with mike in the past with great results. I would venture a guess that he's out of town or predisposed with something important.

I thought he has been inactive on the forums for well over a year.
Were you instructed to send the razor, or you just sent it to their address?

I just sent it.

There was nothing on the website about no longer doing business.

I read all of the pages on his website before I sent it.

I wonder how I will get my razor back.

The website is constructed such that a price and shopping cart are offered via paypal to simply mail the razor in for honing service. From the way the site is presented, no prior approval for mail in is implied. An address is listed with instructions to mail the razor in, and to include contact info with the razor for return shipment.

I see. Well, given the fact that he has not been on the forums for a long time and that he has not responded to PM or phone calls, I'd wait one more week and do a chargeback.
Looks like he is conducting his business rather poorly, communication is critical no matter what is happening. Three weeks without even a notice on the website that there may be delays is way too much for my taste.

I agree. I suppose I hadn't noticed him being MIA. I'm not sure he's worried about the fee, but rather the razor.

I very much doubt he is going to steal the razor, but I have no idea what can you do, apart from what you have already done.
If he is really busy to even look at his mail I'd imagine that eventually you will get your razor back and probably honed. If he's moved to another address it is anybody's guess what's going to happen.

If it makes you feel better, somebody else has been holding one of my most expensive razors which I sent for honing for over six months now.... Things like this happen, unfortunately.

Well, the good news is that I did not make any payment. After trying to contact him I decided not to make a payment until I heard back from him.

I'm still probably out the razor though.

I should have looked harder to find someone here in the Phoenix area that could hone it.

Live and learn I guess.

Phoenix, Arizona?

You mean where I live?

So there is someone here that hones!

I did not get any response back in May when I asked in another post.

Its good to know.
Yeah, it looks like these days many become experts in less than 6 months. If back then you had asked what hones to get you may now be offering honing yourself.

Now I need another razor so I can have it honed.

As an alternative, you may consider purchasing the razor already honed and stropped?

I make no claims to being an expert.
But I would put my edge up against just about anyone else's.

Honing is not a magical gift, handed down to a certain few from Hephaestus.
If I was able to get an edge that is shave ready, comfortable, and truly sharp in 6 months of practice(actually lots less) then that's how long it took.

I am seriously getting sick of a few "Straight Razor Guru's" that want to belittle the new guys, try and make them look bad to the noob straight users. It serves no purpose, and is not very gentlemanly. :mad3:

I believe that is exactly what was being said: that honing is actually rather easy to learn oneself.

It can be a bit daunting to a newbie to try and figure out what hones, etc, etc, etc...and thus sending a razor out for honing is a good idea. But I for one, am in the camp that says honing in and of itself it not that difficult of a task. The angle is set by the razor itself, as it lays on the hone. I honed my very first razor within 30 minutes of opening the box the razor came in.
