Weleda Shaving Cream

proxy.php

any opinions on this brand of shave cream? my wife picked up a tube of this from the co-op the other day and i'm not sure what to think. I tried it out lastnight and it didn't perform as well as I had hoped -- there was absolutely no slide whatsoever and it felt like I was shaving with water. I do realize that the water to cream ratio might've been a little off, so i'm not giving up on it just yet. has anyone else tried Weleda? If so, did it perform as well as any of your other shave creams?

by the way, my wife only bought this cream because she saw that it could be used with a brush

Weleda is basically a brushless cream though some gents have managed (poorly) to get some lather out of it.
I used it for about 4 years: Weleda is a pretty famous brand here in Europe that has built a strong presence in the organic-oriented market and I must say I didn't know any better.
But as soon as I discovered DE razors and all the good stuff about traditional wet shaving I threw my tube of Weleda in the trash! :biggrin1:

As usual, YMMV.

I too have heard that their cream is intended to be used brushless, so I never even bothered to try it.

The Weleda aftershave lotion and aftershave balm are both quite nice, though.

I've never tried it brushless. I think if you use a brush you need a much larger amount of cream than you'd think. Also, it does a decent job of helping to make a superlather when you've got a brush full of sub-par lather from a soap that just isn't too good.

As some previous posters pointed out, this stuff lathered terribly for me. Scent is ok, but I had to use a LOT (easily twice the amount of a "normal" cream) of product to get a decent lather. It's been relegated to my lower shelf.

That is interesting. I was given some Weleda and Speick cream from a colleague who brought them straight from Germany. The Weleda I use the same way I use my other creams, about an inch long snurdle and lather up in my scuttle. It works fine for me like any of my TOBS, Floris etc creams. I just checked on the card board box and it has the same ingredients any of the other creams I use:
Water, Potassium Stearate, Glycerin, Potassium Cocoate, Potassium Olivate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Olivate, plus a number of other ingredients that I am to lazy to list here (mainly plant extracts, EO's).
There are maybe two versions out there, one is mainly a brushless version that you guys all have, and one is the "standard" cream I have. The next time I go to my whole food store I check on the ingredients listing they have.

that's the thing, I didn't really change the way I use this cream over the others. maybe there was too much water - either way, I ended up using adding a little bit of Godrej to give it some slickness. the other thing I don't like about Weleda is the price...it's about $11 for a 2.5 oz tube :thumbdown

That's a lot, though, I agree. I was lucky and my college brought me two each Speick and Weleda, so I am good for some time with these. I am not sure how much he paid, but I think it was something like 3.50-4 Euros, which is about $6 or so - they $11 is way too much.
BTW, I went to Weleda's site and they recommend to wet your face with your brush (!!) and apply the cream to the wet brush and face lather it. I do it in my scuttle, but I had very good results with 4-5 passes with an inch of cream and still had enough left. Maybe the next time I use it, I try the face lathering.
I must say my face feels great after I use Weleda, much better than with most creams I use.

I wonder if it's super sensitive to hard water. I somethimes feel that TOBS is.

I used it in both soft water - here in my house I have a softener - and in very hard water in a Mexico City suburb, in both cases I am getting a good result. How much do you use?? I always use a bout an inch long snurdle, it is enough lather for 4-5 passes with a lot left over.....

About an almond sized dollop.

I bought this cream in a very convenient travel size tube of 10ml. I thought it had a very pleasant scent, I had no trouble lathering up (in soft water) and it gave me a decent shave with no severe moisturizing issues. My only grudge with this is its lack of slickness compared to for example Speick. This cream will not be part of my regular rotation but it might be useful in a super-compact travelling kit.

This is awesome cream! I've used it while shaving in the shower for years, by putting it into my hand and working up a thin lather without a brush.

However, this morning I used my trusty VDH Deluxe boar brush and produced a satisfactory face lather that was super slick, cushiony and wonderful to shave with.

Even better than Kiss My Face.

Nice violet scent, absolutely terrible in the lathering department. I recall that the contents of the tube had gone all hard, so I wasn't squeezing out soft cream, but rather solidified fat. Needless to say, I threw out the tube soon thereafter. If I want to go the 'all natural'-way, I'll use Lavera.

The Lather Maestro
Bit of an old thread bump, but I was just given some of this by Captain Pre-Capsize, as he couldn't get it to lather well.

I have to say, it worked like a champ for me! I definitely used an inch to inch-and-quarter line of cream in the scuttle, then began whipping it up adding water very slowly. I will say it took a fair amount of effort, but transitioning to my face when it got halfway decent and continuing to lather gave me a very nice result.

Scent is something not dissimilar to MdC (which I do not like), but not quite that good. It smells mediciny, kidna like those tea-tree oil products sort of way. I will say I got a very comfortable DFS shave with it this morning! Hardware was an EJ DE89 mounted on an Ikon bulldog handle, and a restored brush with 22mm TGN Finest bulb. Blade was an Astra SP on shave #2. Outstanding result.

I will use it a few more times just to see how good I can make it, but given the scent and the effort involved, I won't buy it, that's for sure. TOBS is so much easier. But I have to say I was impressed with the shave!

disclaimer: I am a 90% soap guy, I only fiddle with creams and not many at that. Normally I'll only have one, or perhaps two on my shelf.

Picked this 75ml tube of Weleda cream up today at an organic goods store, priced at 15$. The cream performed well on par with Nivea, Speick or any Proraso tube I've used so far. Scent is very light, lather is cushiony but requires a little more cream than usual. Great protection but due to the small size/price I'm not purchasing a new one. Could be a nice traveller tube though , it's that tiny. Makes me wonder if its really 75ml.
Oh and its not brushless, I bowl lathered it.

Weleda was my first shaving cream, and like the first time, I will always have fond memories about the first use :)

I have never tried the cream but I can say the after shave balm is truly outstanding. It is my daily balm.
In France, the balm is relatively inexpensiv costing only about 10 euros and I think the cream is not much more expensive.
Weleda has a great reputation here in Europe.
