I am looking at a Weber grill as a Christmas gift from the wife. One feature they offer on the really high end models is the welded-rod grill grates. I am thinking of getting a more base model and adding the grates (they are pricey, but the others look terrible). Anyone have any experience with these grates?

Not with their gas grills in general but have a Performer and a WSM. I've used the customer service a few times, one of the best around.
I have an older Weber Genesis Silver that I picked up used last year (got it for free so no complaints).
I was looking at the stainless welded solid grates to replace the porcelain ones that it now has. Have not done anything yet but it is still on the "to do" list

If it's charcoal you use (Kingsford charcoal with soaked Apple wood chips for us), I'd reconmend the Weber 'One-Touch Gold Grill'.

If you want to add a grate, check out the mangrate. They're awesome and if you check around you can find a coupon code. I only paid $20 for mine.

I have one that I bought in 2000. Gas. Even though it hasn't had the best care it works wonderfully. The biggest benefit I have found is a great warranty and the fact that you can get parts for a 12 year old grill with a phone call.
