What's new

We need a "Don't snipe me on this auction!" forum

ha ha its a thing about trust

i recall john writing on GSL for no one to touch the big 9/8 bengall so we left it but im not sure if it would work on such a large group as that visit this part of B&B

I just lost a coticule worth $100 and an Escher worth maybe $200 at $34 and $36 respectively. (I was #2 on both). I'm hoping a forum member got them. I just threw the bids out there in case no one else ID'ed them.

I hope someone here got them, the same guy sniped me on at least two auctions.

The last time I spent time on the bay, I started being tempted to look into autosnipers. That's when I decided to leave. If I can't win it fairly, I don't want it.

Now I hang out on BST, mostly. There's still immediacy, because if you don't pounce on the deals, they're gone quick :)

What do you mean if you can't win it fairly? The winning bidder offered more than you did, period.

Exactly as Ouch says. The sniper bid more than you and won. Just because he/she put the bid in during the last few seconds makes no difference. I will admit to using snipes as it will frequently stop a bidding war with the prices going silly but you still need to put your maximum bid in and if it goes for more than that, well someone wanted it more than you did.

I doubt if you will have much luck pursuading a particular group to refrain from bidding on an item of interest to you, especially when that group is probably the most likely people to share your interest in that item. I have had much better luck getting quality shaving products at fair prices from the Badger and Blade BS&T forum.

If I want something from Ebay badly I ALWAYS wait till the last 2-3 seconds, and I usually put the most that I think a product is worth. I got tired of people sniping me or running my price up. Sometimes I get it for what I bid, but sometimes I pay half of my bid. There have been MANY times when I get outbid before I get my chance; then I quit the auction and look somewhere else.

But I haven't won anything on the Bay in the past month, so that wasn't me. Good luck on your next auction!

I’m stumped
it is a auction after all. best price at close of aution wins.
here in NZ we have a online aution which works a bit differnt at closing. If you bid with only a few seconds to go the aution then extends by 2 minutes.

must be a new feature.
I didn't realise they did that.
I tend to bid and then if i really want it i'll set another at my highest price i'm willing to pay.
I'm fairly tight so i don't win much

I think jred was referring to a program that puts in your bid automatically at the last second without you needing to be there. That is definitely not the same as sniping manually.

Using programs like that is clearly an advantage and can be viewed as unethical.

Do you think this stops the thousands of people using snipe programs? I don't think there is any ethics when it comes to eBay. And even if you use a program eBay will still out bid you of the snipe isn't higher than the high bidders bid. I use snipes and i dont always win.

How is sniping unethical? It just automates the process so you don't physically have to be at your computer when the bid ends.

Want to beat me in an auction? Bid more than me.

I'm surprised that people still view bid snipe programs as unethical.

I use esnipe, but the reason I use it isn't last second bidding on a particular item. I use it because I can find 5 of something that I want one of, and put bids in on all 5. When I finally win one of them, then I just remove the other bids. I only have to log in once to make the bids and once again to cancel any remaining when I finally win one.

If you do that on ebay, you'd have to retract bids, which is against the rules.

It used to really irritate me when somebody would come in with a snipe bid in the last 15 seconds of the sale and go over me. So I feel your pain:)

Now, I think about the item I am looking at, decide exactly how much I want or am willing to pay for it, and put that amount in. That way, if I win it, great. If I win it cheaper than my max bid, even better.
This approach has put an end to having to obsessively watch an auction (mostly) and getting in a bidding war in the last few minutes where I end up paying more than I wanted to.
It's not as exciting but it is a lot less irritating.
