We got a cat

Wow! I've always been more of a dog person, but we recently took in a stray cat for my 5 year old daughter. We took him to the vet and got him "taken care of"

I just have to say, he is awesome! Super friendly, and I never knew how easy it was to train a cat to use a litter box. This has been an eye opening experience.

I was a dog person (I had four at one time when I was a teen) up until I got my cat when I had my first tiny apartment. Eight years later, she is still one of the best things in my life. Congrats on your new little addition!

I am probably more of a dog person, but we generally have had them both at the same time. They are both great to have around. A dog loves you more, but a cat is a lot less maintenance.

Remember, as someone once told me, if you should suddenly shrink to 2 inches tall, your dog would still be your dog. However, your cat would eat you.

Would not be anything personal about it, but that is what would happen.

Yes, cats certainly march to their own drummer but that's part of their charm. I find them to be much like many females I have known...ready to ignore the heck out of you when you want to play with them but then come running and purring as soon as you turn your back and start to focus on something else. (Come on ladies, you know he's joking....or is he?)

You don't need to train a cat to use a litter box, you just need to be sure that cat knows where it is. The cat will train you to keep it clean!

I have almost always had a cat or dog, and often both, in my life. I would hate to have been a kid without the experience. This is a good thing you have done for your daughter. Many life lessons to be learned from a cat.

Now go get a dog as well! Don't worry about compatibility. Cats and dogs that live together get along just fine. I know this from long experience. The cat will be higher in the pecking order than the dog.

And yes, cats can be independent, but the older they get the more they appreciate you.

Dogs may be man's best friend (technically it's yeast) but cats have some sort of mystical connection with us.

Both cats and dogs basically want nothing other than to love you, but while dogs don't have an off switch, cats maintain their devotion only until they're bored, which is most of the time.

Leave it to Jay to reveal that I've been dating nothing but cats and dogs all this time. :bored:

I know what you mean, we took him to the litter box and we were set. Amazing!

FWIW, we have a dog and he's outside

We are lucky with this one, he is very affectionate! We've been pleasantly surprised.

BTW... If you aren't talking about yeast's health benefits, I'm gonna need a little help with that reference.

Any chance his name is LimeCat? He's super friendly, eye opening, and litter box trained too.

Congratulations Paul! I used to hate cats. My ex-wife brought home a kitten from the shelter one day and I immediately fell in love with the little fur-ball. Well the ex-wife is long gone but I still have my little fur-ball. Luckily my current wife wasn't allergic. Cats realy do rock! My current plans include a Maine Coon.

I thought about one of those as well... My wife had a really hateful cat growing up, and I'm doing my best to get her convinced to get a Maine Coon. She's afraid that she'll get a really really big mean cat if we do though

No, he's not limecat, but he might end up being orange or lemon hat at some point . Speaking of LimeCat, where is Chip these days?

Good question; that's why I asked you about your cat. I assume Chip is super busy, but he's been off line since Thurs.

Another cool things about cats are the high possibility of memorable antics.

Imagine waking to see a cat perched on the head of the bed staring you right in the face.

I can already imagine. This morning he found a small hole in the box spring and hid from us. It took nearly 15 minutes to find him in my little ol' house.

Cats are great. I currently have a siamese on my lap. Maine Coons are very affectionate. I had one for about 6 years that passed on a while back. I had adopted her from a shelter. She had been about 5 or so when I got her. I still miss her terribly. The siamese was my late mother's cat. Mine now. She's about 11 or 12 now. When she's gone I'll probably get an orange tiger kitty.
