Water too hot?

I use a Moss scuttle to lather my creams in. The other day I picked up an electric kettle to heat water to get towels really hot.

I still had some hot water left in the kettle so I poured it in the outer chamber to really heat up the lather. I think it may have been too hot, though. I had a really hard time getting the cream to lather. Anyone else have this problem? I've used the Moss with hot water from the tap and not had this issue.

Yes, too hot of water will heat the lather too much and break it down. The hottest tap water should give you a good warm lather without ruining it. However the "Hot Pot" method has its followers and Joel has a good video on YouTube under the Mantic59 series.

I had the same thing happen to me, so I stick with warm tap-water. The lather broke down too quickly with too much hot water.

Thanks for the info. At first I thought I was crazy. It was like the lather just kept dissapearing.

I can use hot-pot water to soak my brush and I do fine. But when I've used the same water in a Moss scuttle, it baked the hell out of the lather and ruined it.

My experience exactly. I'm receiving the new Georgetown scuttle on Monday. It will be interesting to see if it stays warmer with just tap water. It has a plug where you fill up the outer chamber.

It took me some time to solve this problem too. Eventually I learned that about 1/4 hot pot water and 3/4 hot tap water is ideal for my DB scuttle. My tap water just doesn't get hot enough. I need that little bit of piping hot hot pot water.

I'll give that a shot. My tap water is not that hot either, but I don't want to turn up the water heater. Don't want the little kiddos getting scalded.

The guy who developed Method Shaving -- I forget his name -- once said "Hot water is the enemy of good lather," and I believe it. I used to refresh my scuttle with very hot water from a hot pot halfway through my shave, until I realized how much it deteriorated the lather. Now, my lather isn't as warm during the last ten minutes of the shave, but it's of much higher quality, and a good trade-off, I think.

+1

Yup, I think many of us have experienced this before. Too hot = ruined lather for most creams.
