Wakoli hones

So I was offered these stones for very cheap, 35 Euros for both. I was already starting to learn honing on films, so I used what I know on the hones. My GD was honed before by Alfredo. With the film I could keep it fairly sharp. Now I tried with the hones. Using only the 5k and 8k sides. About 60 laps on each grid, stropped and tried shaving. Horrible... More pulling and tugging then before.
Is this again a learning process or should I have started first with the 2k, then 3k, 5k and then 8k? Because it was first done with film?

It's hard to shave off 8k after you have been accustomed to a higher grit finish, IMO.

Try running it on your films after the 8k

Hmm..ok I try next the 3um and 1um then. I was looking to pass by the film as it is so hard to get here.

If you add a 1K and a 12K stone you would have a full progression and could hone a razor from dull to "shave ready".

With what you already have I would go with something like a Naniwa SS 12K. The hard Ark stones are better used after a high grit stone.

Thanks Rick, would a hard Arkie oil be ok too for a finisher?Thank you for the advice! Was already thinking about also getting a coticule aferall.

I used a trans Arkansas stone as a final finisher with good results for a while. If it were me, I'd go to a Coticule.

Yup, I am going to get a coticule coming week. Just for the info: Just did an additional 60 laps with the 1u film, stropped, HHT3 is there. Can't wait to shave tomorrow again haha

Depends on the Hard Ark, and the 8k in question. Some/many Hard Arks would be fine to use after an 8k JIS stone like a Naniwa SS. I had a very nice white Hard Ark - and it was an excellent finisher, after an 8k. Following the Hard Ark with a SB Ark made for an excellent finishing progression after doing the grunt work on synths.

Those stones you have - it's hard to say how they compare to a Shapton or Naniwa set. The particle size, density, and abrasive type are unknown to me. They could be great for razors, but perhaps not. Only testing will tell.

A Translucent/Surgical Black or another flavor of very hard Arkansas stone would be difficult to use right after an 8k though, a bridge stone might help there.

A coticule is an excellent option - but IMO it's entirely possible that your Hard Ark might be able to refine the edge further than a Coti.
It's impossible to say one way or another without testing the stones, and/or trying different techniques using them.

Well, tomorrow my new Coticule 20cmx6cm (large one due to unexpected bonus this month) will arrive together with a Nagura slurry stone. Lets see how quickly I want to sell my Wakoli stones again.

Chico, if you need a razor honed while you learn your coti you can always send it over the border to me. I'll stick you a coti and welsh slate edge on it, that's my new favoured finish. Let me know if I can help.

Great offer, BB! Much appreciated. For now I have two razors which are ready. I just got the coti in this evening and will have a go at it. Is it ok that I keep your offer in mind if I need it later?

With pleasure, I'd love to get some feedback on my edges. I love them but others may think different.
