Waiting for Replated Gillette President from Reliable

It has been three weeks since I spoke to the folks up at Reliable Electroplating about my Gillette President sent up there for replating. I am really looking forward to receiving it back.

Patience needs to be exercised when awaiting Reliable's reliable replating. It will be worth it, but calling is the best way to find out where you're at in the queue.

They have a four week turnaround generally. I had them replate a Slim and got it back in two. Are you having it plated in rhodium?

Reliable is well named. You will be pleased with the results. I had my Red Tip redone in rhodium, and it took the six weeks they'd suggested it would. Other metals are generally quicker. Worth the wait, regardless of the substance!

As long as you post pictures when you receive it back you will be fine :)

Well, Reliable isn't quite turning out to be so .. sent them a couple razors & heads (Brit #15 OC, Gillette New Improved from a Decollete set, and Old, and a couple heads, which were delivered to them March 18th, this year. I've called on a couple/three week rotation for what is now running two (2) months. Tried again today, guy is said to be busy plating, no call back.

I've not pushed him, I understand that razor plating is only a sidelight for them, and there are plenty of razors here. But the delay (I've been told manyana four times) seems to be getting to the edge of acceptability. I'd be fine if I'd been told it would be July, originally, but to have been advised on several occasions that the check was in the mail prompts this post. Hope that the post doesn't prompt the loss of the razors in a plating disaster

So take Reliable with at least a grain of salt.

A question to those having previously nickle-plated razors re-plated in rhodium... can you explain why? I know the English SS's that were rhodium-plated carry a much higher sale price, but I don't know why? Is the finish stronger or shinier? And is it OK to ask what they charge to replate the razor, both in nickle and rhodium?

Well, Reliable quoted (its been so long, but think I know) $55 for Rhodium vs $45 for Nickle. I wanted the Brit done in the original Rhodium, the other items that I sent them were to replated in Gold or Silver, depending on their original finish.

Rhodium in my very limited experience (a couple British & a 50's Executive?) holds a better shine, but whether my examples were used as hard as their nickel plated brethren is beyond me

I have to say I am growing a little impatient with Reliable. I sent my razor up there in early March. I called them in April and have spoken to Dale a couple of times. Each time I am told it is about a week more.

I'm sorry to hear that it's taking so long to get your razor back. It's always nerve wracking when you send off a treasured razor and hope you get it back in better condition than when you sent it. I recently had two razors replated by Krona Kruiser and he did a really nice job. I think it took about three weeks from the time I mailed them to the time I got them back (he told me 2-4 weeks). If you decide to have another razor replated, you might send him a pm.

I think it's best to use someone who specializes in plating razors like Dave at West Coast Razors.

Reliable is a turn-off for me. They have a website with a link to request quotes, but they won't respond to emails.

Reliable responded to my email with a quote and seemed nice to deal with, despite the delay. The only reason I am using them is that Krona does not replate in rhodium. I already have 2 Krona plated razors in bright nickel.

I'm a fan of Dave at West Coast, especially when it concerns price and value. I bought mine straight from him instead of buying one and sending it out for a replate. I've noted small defects, but nothing to keep me from buying three from him. $image.jpg$image.jpg$image.jpg

Reliable is slow and they don't get along well with electronic communication, however, you will be extremely happy with their work. It took 3 months for me to get my 4 razors back, but the rhodium finishes are absolutely flawless. Even with the slow turn around, I would use them again without a thought.

As I said, no problem with it taking time here. Not sure that I don't when what they tell you in a series of phone calls is less than accurate.

I understand that they probably need to wait for a large enough group of razors and other little things to accumulate to dunk in the rhodium tank; I get that, but it is a little frustrating when they keep saying "next week." I hope that the results are worth the wait.

I have nothing but praise for Reliable. They did my birth year Red Tip in Rhodium and it is perfect. It took six weeks, and was worth the wait. Best of luck to you.

The four razors I sent were my two Tradere's, my Feather, and my Cobra. My four favorite razors. 3 months seemed an eternity. I would do it again. You won't be sorry.
