Volume of Smoke?

I have been smoking a pipe for about 4 1/2 months now, and in that time I have watched quite a few YouTube pipe smoking videos. In almost all of these videos, the amount of smoke blown out of the mouth is quite small.

Now when I exhale smoke from my mouth, it tends to be a quite large cloud in comparison.

Am I doing something wrong? My pipe doesn't get overly hot, and I am not getting tongue bite, so I don't think my rate of puffing is excessive.

Is this simply a function of not sipping the pipe (I am not even sure what that means, as the force to sip liquid through a straw is quite great; greater than what I use when puffing my pipe), but instead taking a longer draw on it?

This large amount of smoke phenomena holds true for me, regardless of what tobacco I smoke: presently I have open Smoker's Pride Cherry Cavendish, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, Sutliff Alexander Bridge, and Sutliff Moulin Rouge.

John, as long as you aren't smoking like a steamship, you should be OK. Like everything else here, YMMV. They could be producing large amounts of smoke so it appears good on camera. No one can really see a wisp of smoke on camera (or perhaps the camera adds 10 lbs of smoke :tongue_sm). The most important thing is you aren't getting TB or an overheated bowl, so I wouldn't worry too much about it!

I'd agree. If you are enjoying yourself, not getting any tongue bite, and the pipe isn't getting overly warm, then I'd just keep going with what you are doing.

I will say, I've never really agreed with the "sip" terminology, either. But yeah, very light somewhat short draws are the overall goal. It won't heat the pipe, you get better flavor from the smoke, and adds to the relaxing contemplative aspect of enjoying a pipe.

The volume is so variable with the different combinations as long as you're enjoying it don't overthink it. Just sit back, relax and puff away.

Great advice there, different tobaccos especially can produce different amounts of smokes. The main thing to be concerned about is flavor. If it is flavorful to you, and you can enjoy it, you're doing it right.

I think what they mean by sipping, is small sips of smoke. The main benefit I can see from this is helping to ensure you don't smoke it too hot, but if you aren't having trouble with this, I wouldn't worry about it. I have started to do this some myself, and it has helped me smoke cooler, I am taking several small sips, getting more flavor, and having the flavor last a little longer, while not getting the tongue bite I encountered a couple times while taking bigger puffs less frequently. I have also noticed I have less trouble with the pipe going out with the smaller sips of smoke, though that's not really a big issue, just something I have noticed.

My avatar agrees.

Just puffing. Cigars and Pipes are never supposed to be inhaled. I don't have taste buds in my lungs, so there would be zero benefit in inhaling.

I know some people who have a hard time NOT inhaling--former cigarette smokers all.

To each their own, but IMO, it seems unnecessary, harsh and detracting from the nature of pipe smoking to inhale.

I purposely inhale through my nostrils some of the smoke that drifts out from puffing, but that is really only due to it adding to the level of flavor and scent you can pick up.

Yeah, retrohaling like that brings out the aroma of the tobacco. Full blown inhale is not for me.
