What do honemeisters recommend to put on a spine when honing, especially for the second bevel? Seems to me that different brands have different thickness. Plus, the width should play a role, should it not? Any comments are appreciated.
I'm not a honemeister, but I think any black, elecrical tape will do. I use black electrical tape, though I've no idea what kind it is. If you want thicker, you can do layers.
I bickered a bit with honemeisters about the effect of the tape thickness on SRP a few months ago. The general consensus I got from them was that they consider the thickness too little to make an appreciable difference.
I use 3M electrical tape, but I suspect any variety will work. You can even use scotch tape if you want, but it won't last as long if you're doing major bevel work. Works fine for touch-ups though.
I've been using some red electrical tape I picked up at Home Depot. I like it a little better than the 3-M I had previously. Plus it comes in a variety of colors. Although I'm not exactly sure how that helps with honing.
I only use it at the final polishing stage on wedgy designs that have larger bevels, the thought being to concentrate effort on extreme edge. I'm presently using automotive masking tape '3M Fine Line Tape' 1/2 inch width. It seems to work o.k.
