Vintage straight razor

As a newbie while searching for a place to get a straight, i came across a website "vintage straight razor". Can anyone give me some feedback on them as i may use them to buy from.

Thanks:biggrin1:

I would stay away from there. I've personally been burned from there. It was my own fault for not doing my due diligence on some of the products they were selling there.

Thank you everyone for your help, there sure is a wide selection with a big price range.

Welcome fellow Kiwi.
+1 on the BST.
If you are looking for your first straight I and many others would recomended a wipped dog sight unseen deal http://www.whippeddog.com/
There are a few straights on Trade Me that can be had for a modest price. look under cut throat. These will need a bit of TLC and a hone. As with all autions it is buyer beware. Poor photo's etc and you may be left less than happy.

i think if you don't go with a whipped dog deal, then try to look for something in the 5/8 round point mid to full hollow in decent condition off the BST. it's pretty middle of the road and will give you a good sense of the art of using a straight at first. and likely won't be too expensive. try keeping your estimate of a nice example at somewhere from $50-$75 used with some hone wear and cosmetic issues. any of the plethora of vintage german blades should be a great start.

I have just started getting into shaving, and trying to find the most I can for as little $$ as possible to start. Later on I plan to buy some more expensive/nice things, but for now I'm saving up.

That being said, in a similar situation I would definitely go whipped dog as his constant reviews are always highly positive (I didn't have to worry about this part as I inherited 3 straights!). If you are going to get a strop/brush, I found star shaving to be the cheapest route. A 3" strop (which I'm thinking will be easier to learn on) comes in at ~$80 most places, and can be had for less than half that at star. He also sells inexpensive badger/boar brushes, which seem to get at least decent reviews. For the price, it can get you started until RAD/SBAD kicks in and you know you want to spend more money on these things.

IMHO I would get a poor man's strop kit from whipped dog and save the 3 inch stop for later. Even though the star shaving is onl ~$40, you're going to destroy a $40 strop. Larry's can be had for half that and you get a pasted balsa strop too. The 2" whipped dog isn't difficult to learn.

Hi Chris
Thanks for the welcome and your comments. I am a little envious at the choices others have compared to us kiwis.

I would go with BST and have it honed by a member. You won't get burned. This site is dedicated to the hobby/lifestyle of wet shaving.
