Vintage Shave Soaps

Has anyone used Old Spice or Burma Shave, shave soaps and how do they compare to "current" shave soaps and where can I get vintage shave soaps?

Vintage Old Spice is a superior soap all around.

Ebay and BST are good places to watch for OS soap. I picked up my Old Spice soap from a member here.

I used OS soap for 35+ years and even after exploring a number of modern soaps still find it superior to many.

Vintage OS usually has lost much or all of its scent...but still worth the effort to find. Personally I will not pay much over $10+ for a puck though. I find Cella to be about the perfect subsitute for OS in all ways except scent.

Vintage Williams is also worth seeking out. I have not used vintage Burma Shave....did Burma Shave even make a soap puck as their advertising was tuned to brushless cream?

It is ironic that there is a Burma Shave soap today since the original Burma Shave product was a brushless shave cream.

I used OS soap for years until I could not find it anymore. It was and is an excellent soap that produced mounds of lather and had the famous OS scent. That and English Lavender were my regulars while they were available. I have never used Williams or Colgate so I can not comment on them.

Cheers,

Doug

I bought one of those Burma Shave kits with the mug brush and soap. When it arrived the scent was overwhelming from the soap. But after a few days it settled down. Burma shave is a hard soap kind of like Williams. At first I didn't like it much. I learned though to use plenty of water and a stiff boar brush to whip up a great lather. After some false starts I grew to like it quite a bit.

You can buy the Burma Shave kits on Amazon and Ebay and from other sellers. The brush isn't great and the mug is too small in my opinion.

I've acquired 4 pucks if vintage Williams and 1 puck of Surrey. The vintage Williams is absolutely fantastic and the Surrey is a very, very good soap as well. Look around at antique stores and flea markets.

I wouldn't exactly call BurmaShave shaving soap vintage. It was probably introduced around 2000ish (I could be wrong), and was only recently discontinued.

You can read some reviews of it here:

From what I have read about it, it is not a soap I would go out of my way to acquire; unlike Vintage Williams, and Old Spice.

I recently found a vintage Seaforth mug with a puck of unused soap in it. Not sure if I should use.

If the soap is not yucky, use it. Good stuff!

I picked up a similar mug with soap in it. It was used maybe 3 or 4 times judging by how the embossed logo was still in high relief. The little paper lid was even there. $2!

I had to take the puck out, rinse off a couple of little bugs and a bit of dirt that had found a home ages ago in the little gap between the soap and mug, and hydrate the soap for a day or two.

After two lathers to figure it out, it makes a great lather! It's not my everyday soap, though, because it doesn't have much of a scent, and that's a fun part of the shave for me.

I can't say how well it compares to Tabac or Cella, as I put it away before I really nailed it, but it's worth using, alright.

Cool I guess its safe to use long as I wash it off then... I have never used vintage soaps before so should be fun. I didnt know Seaforth is ranked up there with vintage Williams. I do hope to find some vintage Williams to try as well.

I picked up the mug and soap cheap at a local antique shop..

Thanks

Richard

Certainly use it!! Vintage Seaforth is good stuff, at least as good as Vintage Williams (which is a great soap!!).

Most of the vintage soaps were tallow based, and as such were wonderful performers. There probably are a few bad ones out there, but thus far the ones I have tried have been really good.
