Vegemite uses

Hey folks,
The wife and I were at Wold Market last night and they had some Vegemite on sale. I've always wanted to try it, so now the question is, how to try it?? I know ti can be used as a sandwich spread, are there any other uses? Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Cheers!

I like it on toast under poached or scrambled eggs. Good with peanut butter too.

If you aren't used to the stuff, or our version Marmite, I must warn you to spread it thin!

I'm an American living for a short while in the UK, and my favorite use for Marmite (basically the same thing) has been to spread a thin layer of it inside a grilled cheese sandwich/cheese panini. The flavors complement one another really well.

USE IT SPARINGLY!!!!!!!! If you have never tried it, it is definitely an acquired taste. Like others have said, spread a very thin layer on toast under something else. Might be a little rough to eat just plain on some bread :letterk1:

Vegemite/Marmite/Bovril are great additions to stews, broths and sauces. They add complexity and "dark" earthy flavors. Anywhere that you might add Worcestershire or molasses are good candidates.

I like Vegemite best spread thin on toast with butter.

But remember, a little dab'll do ya.

A touch is great in a miso broth, too.

For me, Vegemite works just fine right there in the jar. There are very few foods that I've tried that I don't care for, but the Vegemite/Marmite family is near the top of that list.

I don't like marmite or vegimite, but my wife and daughter love the stuff, so being from wales, welsh rarebit, spelled wrong I think, which I believe is toast with maremite on, a layer of cheese, put under a grill, then some worcester sause on top, I think!

Tastes VERY salty to me, so I spread it very thin. My favorite so far is to spread it on one piece of toast for a BLT with miracle whip on the other piece.

Hehe. Use it to bring your shoes to a high gloss!

This is funny, watching people discuss how to "use" Vegemite. Growing up in Australia it was always just there.

Imagine if you saw a thread that said "I was in a market the other day and, right at the back, behind some boxes, I found a jar of peanut butter! How do I use it?". This is great!

We most often just spread it on toast with butter. As others have said, spread it thin until you develop a taste.

The only way is the Aussie way!!!

On toast ...

I actually don't mind it on a toasted cheese sandwich!

Firstly you are either in the Vegemite OR Marmite camp - not both. Families have been split over this issue, it is worse than Democrats v Republicans

Now you have decided which group you are in as others have said the trick initially is a small dose - spread thinly. On toast is fantastic as the saltiness melds with the warm buttery bread. It also goes well with eggs (egg on Vegemite toast) and SAO biscuits and especially well with cheese in a sandwich. Basically it is a great allround spread!

You can also add it to casseroles or stews and I have also used it to baste a roast - Vegemite and Rosemary Lamb or Vegemite and Herb Beef.

Have fun!

This venerable Aussie institution is not to be belittled:biggrin1: 2 ways to eat it:
1. Vegemite on toast
2. Vegemite & cheese sandwich.

I must be odd then as I like both! The Vegemite is a lot milder than the British Marmite. I put that down to it being made from waste lager yeast rather than waste real ale yeast!

By the way, there is a new extra strong version of Marmite in the shops these days.:w00t: Not tried it as the standard is fine for me.

Marmite sucks! Vegemite rules!

Seriously though, as my countrymen have said, on toast with butter is the way to go. And you don't need to 'use' it - just eat it!
