VDH boar brush

Got a VDH starter kit. Nice bowl. So glad I have a badger brush already.

The brush really isn't that bad. It will shed a few hairs at first, but is certainly serviceable.

That said, you can buy a much better quality boar brush (The Omega #48) for a mere $9.00 from West Coast Shaving.

Heck I only give $10 for my VDH starter kit, the soap and bowl is worth that. Even at that I am getting BBS shaves with that brush. Though I am going to turn my own handle soon, as I would like something longer. I will get one of those nibs everyone talks about and call it good. I also talked a friend who is a potter into throwing me a nice shaving bowl. Though I still use the VDH bowl from time to time as it is handy.

Yeah, I like my badger brushes.

But deep down inside, I know that those guys whipping up lather and spreading it on their cheeks of iron with those barbed wire pig brushes are much more manly than I am.

"Silvertip". Sounds like Tinkerbell's sissy cousin.

"Natural Bristle". It's what Bronson did right before he squeezed the trigger.

Don't even get me started on "loft" and "floppy".

Funny....

For the record I have no rain on this side of Washington (The Right side:wink2:)

A few? Mine never stopped. It was like it was alive or something. You're right, though, it's a serviceable brush, but only if you're just starting out and don't know any better.

Personally I quite love the feel of the VDH boar on my skin. Not too coarse. And since I use a lot of hard soaps, I wouldn't want to go much softer. The one thing that bothers me about it is that tiny little handle. I don't want it to be too long (insert joke here), but does anyone else find it painfully unergonomic?

I like the van der Hagen brush. Not bad for the $7 I paid. I prefer my Semogue 1305, but the vdh is totally useable.

with a cheap brush, I think that manufacturing consistency is probably much different than for a Simpson or Kent, etc..

I guess I hit the jackpot on mine.. sure it lost a few hairs at first, but after a few weeks, I've had no problems.

and after a year now, it's softened up really nice.

I take care of it, I rinse it out good and make sure it's sitting up on the shelf.

it's been really good to me.

I can buy the VDH brush locally for $4.50 which is probably all it's worth, but it has its place. For me, it and a puck of VDH soap allowed me to get started shaving as soon as I found a razor. Mine only lasted about 6 months, at which point a chunk fell out of the center, but I got my money worth. And now my toddler plays with it and pretends to brush his face, so it's still got some use. I wouldn't buy another VDH brush, but I don't generally despise it either. I wouldn't order one online, but if you had no brush, and could buy it locally, then it's surely better than nothing.

The Omega boar is, of course, far superior.

I have to admit, I'm kind of impressed with my VDH brush, too. I picked it up for a trip, and it works fine. I don't use it much at all, but when I do, it sure gets the job done. I'm far less hesitant to recommend it now as a "do you like this way of shaving at all?" starter brush.

I've tried a few VDH brushes and they all sucked. I thought it was just my first one, but they all shed like a dog in the summer.

I used my VDH boar tonight, with VDH deluxe and I got great lather. I felt damn manly, too. So it shed a couple hairs...real men relish the opportunity to pick animal hair off their faces.

Superb three pass shave with a Red Tip and Shark. Splashed on a tumbler full of Lilac Vegetal.

I gotta do this more often. I feel like a Tom Waits song.

Haha you and your sharks

Hey, don't knock the boar brushes! There are plenty of us boar-whores out there that don't need no stinking badger!

Anyone else have problems getting the soap OFF their VDH boar brush? I seem to have a good lather, but most of the soap seems to stay on the brush and not make it to my face. Is this just something to do with this brush?
