Valet autostrop blade question.

Hi guys n gals, i have just aquired some nos gillette autostrop blades for the razor and i am about to give it a go, what i would like to know is weather to strop them before use or not.

Thanks in advance.

Some guys say that it does help to strop those blades. I've never found one of the vintage blades that I could use, they're too rough for me. Depending on the type of Valet you have, it may accept the single edge Feather blades sold at Razor Blades & More,or the regular SE blades with the spine removed. If you want to show us a picture of the razor we can tell you for sure.

Thanks for the reply, well i gave it a go without stroping and i would say it was akin to my fatboy with a feather on its 5th shave, i uasualy bin them after 4 shaves and it was just about bearable, so i gave it a good stroping as it can only get better (i hope) i will try to post a few pics. $DSC_0343.jpg$DSC_0344.jpg

Never had a problem with the OEM blades. But alas, they're also the only blade I have for my Auto-strope. Interested in hearing your findings.

I'm not a fan of the vintage blades. I can tell you, however, that morseman's razor (the VC4) and the modern Feather blade are my shaving combo. That's a nice shave. You're stuck with the choice of the Feather or the vintage blades with that model.

Cheers guys, i think that some feathers will be winging their way here to me, ive' just got to find them in the uk or an earlier type of autostrop that accepts the gem blades.

Thanks guys for your info and the link to the blades which i have just ordered. Regarding the nos blades they came in a cellophane wrapped unopened box and were completely untouched double wrapped as well, plus they looked good to the naked eye but i gave it a stropping and i will use it again before the new blades arrive.

I do believe that your razor will be able to use the Feathers. A lot of people don't know that some of the newer AutoStrops accept the Feathers, but others don't. If you look at my old sale thread here:
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/319901-B-amp-B-Benefit-Sale-2nd-try?highlight=
the Feathers fit the gold AutoStrop in that picture, but did not fit in the nickel coated one right next to it... look at the letter T cut out in both razors, and you'll see a difference in the holes cut out to hold the blade. I believe yours will work with the Feather.

Thanks for the link, these valets seem to be a minefield regarding the blades but i will keep my eyes open for an earlier version as i realy like the razor, and if the blades are as good as the feather de's then i am in for a nice shave.

ps, can someone please post a picture of the autostrop that takes the single edge blades.

Look at my link and right behind the 2 Valets I described is one of the older ones, that's what takes the despined DEs. That razor wasn't up for sale because one of the blade stops is broken off as described in that post. You can find one on eBay pretty easily.

Well guys i took your advice and paid up for some feathers and ditched the valets and what a difference a good blade makes, a great shave with only 2 passes but the blades are pricey over here. Now if i can get an old autostrop and a sharp blade for my wilkinson empire set i will be a very happy bunny.
