Using a straight razor for detail shaving?

I just bought a Feather Artists club clone and planned to use it for when I want to detail my goatee. (detailing hair under nostrils, around the edges, sideburns etc). It's pretty much the only thing I miss about using a Gillette Fusion.

Anyone else use a straight razor for this kind of thing? I thought it was a good idea. You can't detail very precisely using a double edge. I was almost considering getting a Gillette Fusion just for detail but I'd consider that a waste of double edge shaving in the first place. Hence why I am getting the straight razor.

I guess I'll be the guinea pig for this experiment.

What I miss while using a double edge is being able to shave the hair neatly and quickly under my nostrils. It's hard to do with a bulky double edge razor. I also miss being able to detail long sideburns. I figure using a straight razor will take care of that problem. I'll still use my double edge to quickly shave my cheeks and under my neck.

Never used a straight for detailing but when I had a beard I found that a SE razor was way better than a DE for edging/lining the beard. I'm guessing a straight will do the trick perfectly.

A straight should be great for your requirements. However, I'd also suggest a three-piece razor with a slimmer head, like the Merkur open-combs, if you find TTO or other head designs too bulky.

So far, a Schick injector has got me the detailed edged lines on my beard.

i imagine a straight would be similar or better.

When I have a beard I edge it up with a Parker shavette. Gives nice clean lines. Where did you get your Feather Artist Club clone?

I use a straight periodically to do the edge work on my goatee and to eliminate uni-brow. Works great. I have a little 3/8 Filarmonica that works like a champ.

you COULD use it for detailing only...but for $40+..man thats a nice "shaper"....:biggrin1:
for detailed work I think the "hair shaper" razors would be much more cost effective..or even a very cheap disposable....

I thought this would be tough for me, too, as I also came from a Fusion. So far I haven't had any real problem. I keep a Bic Sensitive in the shower, just in case. Low tech, low cost option.

I used my straight razor for detailing my deployment disgust-ache while I could stand to have it on my lip. It worked much better than my gilette slim adjustable when I just needed to knock off a few hairs. I prefer my DE for shaving, but the straight is great for the little stuff.

I used it tonight to clean my sideburns and trim the moustache down. (I'm not a moustache or long facial hair guy but if I grow a 2-3 day growth goatee I like to slim the moustache down under my nose. Something that is difficult to do with a DE razor). And it worked well for me. I also used it to shave my cheeks (never used a straight razor before) and managed not to cut myself. I don't think I'll switch to using the straight to do a full shave but you never know.

What blades did you use in the CJB? I am guessing a shavette that uses half DEs would be more convenient, but probably not that much though.
