I purchased a razor from a antique shop, the razor itself was brand new and it looks nice but would a 440 stainless blade usable or should I just put it up as a "This one just has a pretty handle" piece?

the steel is only one very little ingredient.
afik friodurs are made of the same steel, so it is possible that the razor is usable. equally possible that it's junk.

Depends on the razor... Do you have any pictures?
Are there any cracks on the blade/handle? Is the blade chipped? Could be new but damaged. If not, I don't see why it would be un-usable!

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try though. Since you already bought it, I say try valiantly to put an edge on it, even though it's a losing battle.

Nah it will sit out as a "This ones just neat looking" piecefor the time being.
Maybe one day I'll get a wild hair and put those scales on a good blade.
