What's new

us aristocrat

came across this picture of a gold us aristocrat with a lot of the gold plate missing, it looks like it has nickel plate under the gold, i think it would look great with just the nickel plating left, i have one the same in user grade with some gold missing, i wonder how easy it would be to remove all the gold and just leave the nickel. $silver aristo 2.jpg

Some of the US Aristocrats had a nickel base plate like this one and other's had very finicky gold plating, that's why it's a little difficult to find specimens with the plating intact.

I would send it to Krona Kruiser and have him replate it Nickel. I have an Aristo replated by him and I love it.
the one in the pic is not mine, the plate loss on mine is not as bad as that, i just thought how good it would look with all the gold off and just the nickel left, although i dont know how easy that would be, a complete replate would probably be more easy, i wonder if anyone has done this with any success.

one of the reasons i am not a great fan of gold plated razors, i have a mint gold us aristocrat and never use it, i use the user grade one, with nickel or rhodium plated, i use them all even if mint, the nice gold finish wears to easy.

Aggressive polishing with Brasso will remove gold plate from a razor.

Please don't ask me how I know this, but it happened several years (and many razors) ago.

It may also remove nickel . . . I stopped polishing at that point and swore never to use Brasso again . . .

knowing my luck i would turn the whole razor into brass, the user grade one i have is not too bad.$razor 2 053.jpg$razor 2 054.jpgthe usual end cap missing and the gold plate a bit worn, but a great shaver.

Isn't the one that's nickel/rhodium plated a President? You are right in both accounts for plating. The head is nickel and the handle is rhodium. The Pres gives a more aggressive shave than the Aristocrat though.

Been there done that!

Since nickel is a harder metal, you should be fine polishing the gold away. However, I wonder how well you'll be able to get into the fairly deep knurling on the handle before polishing the nickel on the top of the knurling away.
