What's new

Urgent, should I hit the bid button?

I've been outbid on a coti & french frameback lot, got 10 minutes left. The razor looks ok but I'm more interested in the combo coti - looks cool and is a vintage. Thing is it measures about 6 inches by 1 inch! Wadda ya think? Times a tickin.

Honing on 1" wide is fine if you don't mind going quite a bit slower than usual. It's particularly effective for heavily smiling razors like old sheffield choppers and the like. I picked up a 7x1" awhile ago for around $70 and used it quite a bit when I was still honing a wide assortment of razors. I eventually got rid of it since I didn't hone the big smiles as much as before. If this particular stone isn't necessary, I noticed the other day that TSS had a number of ~1" wide bouts in various lengths and some were priced quite cheaply. I believe most of the ~6" long ones were very reasonable.

Edit: Double checked and TSS has a 9"x1" Natural combo for $79. That was the only ~1" wide combo I noticed. Most are slate backed, but they varied from ~$25 on up (Plus shipping I assume since you are international).

TOo late, I guess I was a little ambitious thinking I'd get a reply in 10 minutes. Well thanks for not helping me kick my HAD, now I've got another coti! According to the seeler it's 7 inches by 1 - mistake I made in previous post. And here it is $5867F34B-22CC-4057-BB7E-A48585730DF3-1106-000002C19B5A6D24-2.jpg
By the way, it's the beige phallic object at the bottom!

That's some pretty coloring on top if it's not stains. I'll bet you'll like it. Any idea how thick the coticule layer is in it?

He said the stone is about 2cm at the ends and a little over 1.5 in the middle. It seems pretty well dished but I saw that as long as the stone is flat from one side to the other then the dishing don't matter. We'll see

Really looking forward to this as the shape makes me think someone made it as a barbers hand held hone - held a bit like a strop. Don't know if that's the case but i like to think it is. Now as I got this one cheap I've got my eye on another. Oooooh come in coticule number 4, your time is up!Have to admit that when I take the dog out into the garden before going to bed, I often pass by my hone box for a fondle of my vintage coti, now I'll have one for both hands!

Its a worldwide epidemic! :scared: Someone call the CDC!!! HeHe I have been in a sort of remission lately but I somehow bought 3 coticules this week myself. These guys aren't much help when it comes to talking you out of a purchase by the way.

Narrow coti's are great for honing smiling blades. It's worth having one in the collection just for that. I've got a couple of custom straights with very big smiles and I'd be lost without the narrow coti.

There are a lot of Cottis on the bay lately, some very nice ones at good prices. 2 in wide is about as narrow as I'd go. 1 in is more of a knife hone which is probably why it's dished.

I also like to see more and better photos before I buy. Dont worry, like I said lately there have been a bunch. Cottis are more a nice stone but more hype than anyghing else, glad prices are starting to come down. Have you seen the "Welch Stones" nice finishing stones good buy for the money, especially the Purple LM stone.

2000 years of hype is a pretty impressive run.

And prices aren't coming down. From what I've been told, Ardennes is already selling them about as cheaply as they feel they can, and no one else is mining them. So short of some guy finding a stockpile in his basement and flooding the market for a brief period, the price should hold fairly steady.

Got two cotis and the three welsh stones. This is number three but I prefer my biggy, 8x2, think I'll pimp the last one I got on the bay.

Don't get me wrong Coticules are very nice, fun stones, I have 4. But they are not the best finishers out there. Many folks, self-included finish on other naturals or paste, post coticule honing. I have bought 6 in. Coticules in the 20 - 40 dollar range on the Bay recently. Yea they were a bit beat up, but they clean up nicely and perform like… a coticule.

I have bought new from Ardennes also, to compare with vintage and they are nice...but they are still mid-range finishers. Really people are drawn more to that 200 year mystic by raving fans or the smooth edges, but right now on EBay there is a guy selling “Welch Stones” for about 20 bucks. ThePurple LM stone is very reminiscent of a coticule. The ability to slurry and the feel on the stone and finish are similar, for less money. One of mine finishes keener than a Coticule with about the same comfort level.

From what I have seen prices, have come down for the larger nicer coticules. Perhaps it is just the economy but compared to 2-3 years ago they are down. Now investment wise an 8X3 will only go up in value, once the economy recovers in my opinion. I am a fan, just not raving.

I don't think many people would agree with you that yellow lakes are suitable substitutes for coticules. You can take any moderately fine rock, give it a slurry stone and people will be able to convince themselves it's a substitute for a coticule. I remember awhile back people were promising coticule-like honing on Norton 8k's and Eschers. Honestly I can't think of any stones worse at emulating coticule's aggressive cutting on slurry than slates.

While I have been wet shaving for 50 years, I am very new to straights and honing. Thus my question:

Is what you just wrote based more on personal experience than tangible, scientific evidence? For me there are so many variables, Is what works for one person, or even for many, always also the best solution for everyone?

Isn't the material of the razor relevant; the shape of the blade and bevel?

Forgive me if I am not clear. Remember I am new at this and it probably shows.
