What's new

Unusual Stone I thought was a Thuri.

Picked this stone up. 8x1.75x0.75"

Ends and sides look very much like a Thuri and until I was lapping, I was pretty sure that's what I had.

Its extremely soft and has... an interesting 2-sided pattern. Blue-green with a few light artifacts on one side... and the other... well...

WTH? Tam/snake stone/WoA? Kind of resembles some darker ones and the soft factor. Not sure about sides looking thuringian though. Interesting. Does it feel muddy?

Yeah, feels a bit muddy... I'm starting to remember a 5x2.5" I bought on eBay about 2 yrs ago that was chamferred to look like a La Lune. I resold it, but I think I posted it in a mystery hone thread, and the feel of this stone and the pattern are reminding me of it. I'm gonna try to find it.

Definitely No Tam. Snake/WoA? Not positive.

It feels like an ultra-soft slightly muddy Thuri under the razor, but so do a ton of random slates.

The pattern though. I can't remember it clearly but I'm SURE I've seen it before. I need to find pics of that 5x2.5" stone.

Found it... Not a perfect match... but similar...

Sure it's not a thuri with some anomalous pattern? I have encountered funky stuff in green ones before.

Not sure yet... And my shave this morning (off my new Arkansas) was top freaking notch. VEEEERY unlikely I'll have any cause to shave before tomorrow evening at the earliest... Got a razor ready to go off it though.

If I'm being honest with myself though, I'm leaning strongly towards not Thuri. As my recollection of that 5" stone above comes back, I want to say this stones feel, smell, texture all remind me of it more than what I expect from a Thuri. And my memory of it is that it wasn't quite up to par with a Thuri (though a decent enough finisher).

And even though the patterns aren't exactly the same... looking at these pictures side by side I can definitely see them being two different examples/concentrations of the same pattern... the way manganese on a coticule can just be a few scattered spots or it can almost turn the stone black it's so densely packed in there.

Still, the shave will be the test.

Yellow on slates is something I always equate with reduced fineness. They always seem overly soft and a bit too open textured when they have anything like that to get a crisp edge.

Definitely a possibility that its an odd Thuri pattern I've not seen. If so the guy who bought that 5x2.5" stone from me got a steal (I think I sold it for like $30 or 40).

Maybe @hatzicho could comment on if he's ever encountered Thuringian material with a pattern like in Posts 1 & 9 of this thread in his forages?

Very overcast here, but here are some "daylight" pics".

First couple are the artifacts on the blue side... some scattered yellow orbs and an almost-schwedenstein looking oblong blob (but only one, schwedes have them covering the stone).

It has been sometime, but I think one of them was on Razorlovestones. It was a celebrated water razor stone one of the small ones with yellow inclusions.

I have a german waterhone with a similar pattern- not quite as densely packed with inclusions but the same inclusions by the looks of it.

A few darker thuris with a similar thing going on. Again not as pronounced as your example.

Very cool. This was what I was looking for. Thanks for showing them. That yellow/Blue is a beauty.

Your first three pictures in post 16 remind me a lot of this stone. Looks like what I'd suspect the two sides of my stone meeting in a single face would look like (If I lap the blue side down a bit, I bet it starts to look like that).

edit:

Finally got the shave done... took 49 hrs from the ark shave to need another shave. And I'm convinced it is in fact a Thuri. Had all the hallmarks of a Thuri shave. Close, comfortable, I shaved my goatee off which I skip maybe 4/5 times, and it didn't hesitate or tug, just wiped it right off. It's a Thuri. Very cool patterned one. Shave was definitely a notch up from the 5x2.5" though based on that review/memory, so I'm thinking that was probably some other type of slate with a similar inclusion.

I have several Thuris in my study collection. I haven't seen anything like the stone you've posted.
