Unusual cased Old Type Standard

Here's an Old Type Standard razor from the early Gillette production -- but in a case (I think it's the original) that is not commonly seen with this razor. Notice the way the label is affixed to the head liner. This design was seen in the 1909 & 1918 Pocket Edition sets, but not with the Standard set. Also this is one of those razors with the "G" in the "D" under the head.

Pretty good shape for one of these (likely) 100-year old razors. And I am fond of this unusual lined case.

Must have been easier to affix the label on the liner rather than embossing it right on the fabric. And the lettering held up better with this design.

For the export market -- with fairly straight teeth on the open comb.

Great shaver also. But the engineers were not satisfied with the design and although elements of this model continued to be used in subsequent Gillette designs, they didn't stop with this one.

Another great-looking piece!

And with some interesting features. This razor has the diamond logo in an odd position on the guard - and repeated on the underside of the cap, also unusual. No "Made in..." on the razor, I take it? Is there a serial number?

I think the patch is probably original. We have some evidence that Boston used those patches in early 1909, when the diamond logo was first applies to cases. Montreal seems to have used the patches longer, but mostly for Pocket Edition cases. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/305787-Gillette-Canada-serial-numbers has more data on the Canadian examples. The unknowns still outnumber the knowns, but I wonder if this piece also came from Montreal?

That looks like a "G" inside of a square more than a "G" inside of a "D". I've seen several of the "G" in the "D" versions but this is only the second "G" in the square I've seen. Very nice set.

Nice one, Jake. Your razor looks just like this British Single Ring I posted about a while back -- same large diamond logo stamping on the guard and cap, serial number on the smooth band on the handle, and I'm betting you've got the British patent number scribed on the inner barrel as well. What's your serial number there, by the way?

As far as I've seen, the diamond logo patch in the case headliner was normal even in the Standard Sets during the period when Gillette first switched over from the script "Gillette" to the diamond logo. Is the bottom of the case plain, or does it have the patent dates stamped in like the ABC Pocket Edition cases?

I had a case like that, I thought that was a case version provided with the "Popular"

Is that a Popular or a Senator in there, Phil? Either way, I'm pretty sure that case is older than that razor -- probably by a good 20 years.

That's a Senator in the picture, and that's clearly not the case for it, but I thought I had read somewhere (can't remember where I read it) that those cases were for the Popular and some had the separate tag type logo.

I could be wrong though, the old grey mare's memory ain't what it used to be.

It looks as though the serial number is where the patent info is usually found, in the band just above the knob at the handle's end.

I only know the Populars in the plastic cases or the metal ones similar to the British Aristocrats, and possibly a Traveler set, too. I can't think of any cases with a tag-style logo that'd be similar, but maybe I'm forgetting something, too.

In any case, I'm pretty sure that case that you've got there, like Jake's, is from a Single Ring Standard Set from around 1909ish.
