What's new

Unlappable

Hey fellers how can I lap this hone? I've tried lapping it against other stones and even on the sidewalk. No slurry no scratches nothing.I'xe tried lapping it against a Smiths diamond plate with the same results.Today I broke out the benchmount belt sander with 120 grit and still all I was able to do with 2 belts is take the corners off.Do you have any suggestions in case I wanna have another go at it.Here are a couple pics of the stone in question.I have no idea of the make.

Looks like a silicon Carbide "Faux Coticule" stone. I've lapped a few on a belt sander. My guess is you were pressing down. If you do that, the belt will be toasted INSTANTLY. You have to just rest the stone on the belt and hold it in place. If your sander runs wet, flushing the belt helps speed things up a lot. The worst I've done is eaten three belts (120 grit Norton 4x24's) getting one lapped, and it was ridiculously dished. A single belt or two at worst should fix that stone up. If you give up sell it to me for cheap and I'll lap it and eBay it.

Your right about toasting belts.I was pressing against the belts.I only have a 1 inch vertical sander. My sander has a 8 inch disc also. Do you suggest any particular type of grit to use on this kind of stone?

The hardest material you can get. If there are affordable diamond belts available, I'd use that (I never looked). I kind of suspect there aren't so that leaves a Silicon Carbide belt. So your rubbing equally hard materials against eachother. Both will abrade (so the belt will wear fast) but since the stone itself is much denser, if you press, the belt is almost instantly destroyed.

I doubt Aluminum Carbide belts would work as well since the belts grit is SOFTER than the stones in that case.

If you really care about the stone enough to cover shipping both ways and maybe $5 for belts I can probably give it a rough lapping on my 4" wide sander for you. However if the length is more than 6.5-7" it will be slightly on the rollers so there will be a very slight dip at one end that you would need to rub out on a diamond plate (15-20 minute job on my XC DMT, but it's miserable work so sorry but may not feel up to it, thus be prepared to do it yourself).

The stone is 8 inches long so its too long without creating a dip. Thanks for the offer though.

I have one like that and what I can tell you that it is Norton India. Carborundum grey coarser with fine ceramix on the other side. To be honest not worth lapping.
