As you can see from my post count, I tend to spend more time reading than "talking". But I thought I would share my thoughts from my initial shave with my new Futur. Most of the 15 razors in my collection are Gillette's -- nothing exciting, exotic or particularly valuable -- various Super Speeds including the obligatory birth-year razor, the "tips" (red, blue, silver), a Fat Boy, a Slim, a Short Black Adjustable, a Super Adjustable, and an Aluminum Travel Ball End that my Dad had (for some unknown reason). There is also a Progress. Oh. And a 1934 Gem Micromatic heavy brass open comb... (All of which have had at least one turn at bat...)
For the past couple of years, my favorite has been the long black handled 1969 Super Adjustable. I tend to use it most but the Fat Boy, the Slim & the Progress also get their turn. But there is just something about the long adjustable that works well for me. I think the long handle lets me offset my grip toward the tip and give the head enough leverage to cut without being pushed. Which may have served me well tonight with the Futur...
Anyway, tonight's shave...
A splash of Musgo Real...
A Chubby II...
Taylor of London Lavender soap...
Dorco ST-301...
Futur...
Nivea Post Shave Balm...
I've wanted either a Futur or a Vision for some time. After doing some reading on the forum, I finally decided I liked the mechanics of the Futur better and ordered one. At that point, I should have left well enough alone and stayed away from google. By the time it got here I was about half afraid to even put a blade in it, let alone shave with it. Anyway, I decided to use a nice mild Dorco for the 1st shave. I've always found them pretty forgiving and mild to use; however, the trade off is a not very aggressive shave...
(Most of the time) I left the razor dialed down and did my usual -- WTG for the first pass and then ATG for the 2nd lathering. I've read a lot about this being an aggressive razor. I think that description is a little misleading. I think, like pretty much every adjustable I've ever used, you get to decide how aggressive you want it to be. Dial it down and it's user friendly. Crank it up and it's willing to punish you if you get careless... That's not to say you can just dial it down and then be casual and careless but it doesn't need to be feared either, just managed...
I don't think this razor likes to be rushed. It prefers to make it's way across your face under it's own power rather than be pushed and shoved. It has a pleasant tone to it's song but not a lot of volume. I didn't really feel a lot going on. It was just a very uneventful shave. But when I was done my face was much smoother than I expected and I was a little surprised at that because I really didn't feel it was shaving that close. There were zero weepers, nicks, cuts or burns. No drama. Just a very nice shave...
The only downside I found was the size of the head does make it difficult to get up tight against the nose. However, the size & weight of the head is what makes this razor shave so well...
So if you are holding off on a Futur --- well --- don't...!!!
