Under the nose with a SE?

How the heck do you shave under your nose with these things . . .

Day #2 with my Ever-Ready 1912. I really like the razor, but for under my nose even a DE is so much better. I can't get the top areas without going sideways (I can't do ATG here to save my life), and sideways is so inefficient even with buffing that I simply can't cut the stubble without scraping the heck out of the skin.

Rest of my face/chin/neck is fine.

I did get so fed up this morning that I took out my New long comb and in 10 seconds had the stubble gone without any problems.

I figure that learning to use this razor is dependent on maintaining a proper angle (I am trying for shallower cutting where the blade is closer to parallel to the skin rather than a more aggressive angle currently; trying either shallow or deep angles under the nose seems to not work well either way currently), but the nose thing is annoying.

I do wonder if I will be able to shave as close as my DE's, even with practice - my New shaves slightly closer. On the other hand, I like the "loudness" of the 1912 and it just plain looks cool as heck. I currently have a love/annoyance relationship with it.

When I started, I acquired a Schick injector just to do under the nose. I can't remember who suggested it--either Turtle or Wingnut--Now I can get it done with my iKon OC with several sideways passes, or even ATG. I've never used an Ever-Ready, but it IS a cool looking razor.
:biggrin1:

At my present level of skill with my SE, XTG doesn't sufficiently shave the area and also gives me some irritation/nicks. ATG simply tugs and irritates far too much.

With a DE, I can effectively shave the area XTG although WTG works even better for me.

Decided that I will be trying out a GEM Junior as well - I've heard that they are milder than standard 1912's but as efficient, and unlike the Damaskeene will take the ornate handle threading. I swear, this hobby is like a never ending whirlpool!

Pull your nose up with you off hand. Then come in with the blade perpendicular to your skin, right up under your nose. Then roll the razor down like you would a straight.

I will try that, though I have never used a straight. But I use a DE blade that way, which works well (even without nose pulling).

When I first started SE shaving, I had the same problem. Over time, I was able to use a combination of a sideways stroke, not really e to w but kind of slant wise. Also just push my nose up on the ball with my thumb and carefully do a downward stroke under each nostril. By careful, but seems to work as well as a DE and/or injector.

To get really good with atg under the nose with a se you really need to learn to lock your wrist and get used to the buttered toast sound. Like I used my 1901 star for my last shave and it does feel grabby atg under the nose unless you have the right angle and don't pussyfoot around. SE seem really intolerant of hesitation in approach.

XTG is easier and gets pretty much everything.

Tried both XTG and WTG today - WTG worked much better (tried V approach initially and then mashed my nose out of the way with my thumb and razor to approach that area as high up as possible - those 2 things both helped significantly).

I shaved the other side of my face with a New long comb for comparison and got a nick going XTG. :wink2: No nicks with the 1912 though.
