What's new

Uh oh. I'm in trouble.

I've managed to not wander into this forum for almost half a year... suddenly, I'm here... and I find myself wanting pens! I don't even write anything... like, at all... my handwriting isn't even as good as chicken scratchings... but there's leather bound planners, and notebooks... and pens! Oh gods, the pens! Going on a shaving purchase restraint wasn't supposed to transfer to me buying stuff to write with... :scared:

I used to be a regular on the FPN forum... until I started therapy.... Thinking I need another session on the couch to help me out with B&B

Fountain pens don't have to break the bank, just enjoy the ride.

Oh, I smell that line... that's the exact same smell as "Switching to a DE will save you money every year since you aren't buying expensive cartridges..." lol

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Welcome aboard. You really only need one pen.

I somehow managed to say that with a straight face.

lol Yeah, so... I actually have a couple FP's already... this isn't exactly new to me. I tried the Bic disposable FP. Loved the feel and the way it wrote, but the cap seemed prone to cracking and wouldn't stay on the body of the pen, happened to like 2 of them? I think I had?... I then went and got the Pilot Varsity. Sturdier construction, but doesn't feel/write as nice. More issues with the ink bleeding on some various paper I've used it on.

I also have a Sheaffer calligraphy kit at home, unopened, with replaceable cartridge type inkwells or whatever the official term is on those... lol Previous experience with those, if memory servers me, was that the ink was always sort of watery, never really giving a good solid line... and it took forever to dry..

Save the empty carts and refill them using a syringe and a 18 gauge blunt irrigation needle. That way you can put in the ink you like using. The carts are short so don't toss them. They are hard to locate because not too many pens use the short Sheaffer carts

Sure it starts with just a couple fountain pens. Then you just need a couple inks to put in them, maybe a blue and a black. Then someone introduces you to eye droppers and you'll need a couple of those. You have to try a piston filler and a vacumatic. After that you see someones cool notebook and order one of those and then a guy puts up an example of gothic handwriting and you start looking for practice books.

Don't worry though, just think of all the money you'll save on ink over those expensive ballpoint cartridges.

Its not the pens that get you, its the inks, paper, wax seals, envelopes, and the pens that really get you

if it helps you can tell yourself its going to save you money and help the environment

So the set I had wasn't Sheaffer, it's some Chinese set that isn't even as good as the Hero's I've heard about. These do not even function at all, actually. lol At least the booklet the came with it has some ok sample alphabets. This set was made for more of a calligraphy perspective, but that's OK, I'm a bit versed in that side of the pens and ink stuff.

I also already have a generic wax stamp, and wax to go with it, I use it on bday cards, xmas cards... stuff like that. I would like to get a custom made stamp at some point, and quality sealing wax as well, instead of the pretty much candle wax stuff they sell at the local craft and hobby shop.

Uhm... yeah... so... it seems I should have belonged in this sub-forum well before I actually wandered in here, or something. I am so doomed... lol

I enjoy the wax I've purchased from Goulet Pen Company. In fact, I've enjoyed just about everything I've purchased from them!

Sounds like you're "investing" to me. Way different from "spending".

It's not investing if I am buying things I then have to buy more things to use with them, and then find ways to justify using them. lol I currently use some sort of writing device about once every 4-7 weeks... if that. I know, that can be changed, but that's adjusting to justify buying pens, inks, paper, journals... heh

All that being said, I'm by no means saying that isn't exactly what I will end up doing. I'm just putting it down here so I can't disillusion myself as to the facts during the process. lol
