In honor of my new friend from New Zealand and my curiosity about New Zealand lanolin, I searched out, thanks to some B&B Kiwis, "Old Fashioned Shave Cream by Triumph and Disaster," and gave it a try. When I ordered this I also ordered a five-pack of Kai blades. I was curious. They both came today so I set up to shave this evening and test them.
I loaded the Kai in my Weber Wave, and soaked my Whipped Dog Silver Tip, which was long enough in loft to work well with cream.
My Becker scuttle was full of hot water and I squeezed a generous portion of OFSC into the bowl. I began to work up a lather. It was very bubbly. The cream smelled strongly of spearmint making it seem a bit frivolous. I worked it and worked it and worked it and the bubbles remained.
Still, hopeful I brushed it onto my face, kind of thin. I worked it some more in my Becker but it refused to thicken, and looking at it in the mirror, I decided I did not want to shave with this. So I wiped it all off, and whipped up a new lather using Irisch Moos, and the lather was good.
Then I picked up my Weber and began to shave. I shaved the right side of my upper lip, and a wee bit of the left, and it hurt. The Kai was rough, very rough, and it was tearing up my face.
I unloaded the Kai and after some thought, selected a Gillette 7 O'Clock Black. I replaced the missing lather from my upper lip and had a very fine shave, although my upper lip still hurts.
This was a shave that started off with hope, ended with satisfaction, and had a little unpleasantness in between.
I shall not, as yet, give up on the OFSC. I owe it to my Kiwi buddies and to Dion Nash, New Zealand cricket star who owns Triumph & Disaster.
I will not try another Kai. Perhaps my next PIF, if someone wants to give them a go, well I will add them in.
