Trying to decide on a bigger brush

So here's what I'm thinking:

  • Shavemac #25 26mm, silver tip

  • Savile Row 3126 26mm, silver tip

  • Rooney 3/2, Faux Horn, "Super" silvertip

  • Something else! (post it in the comments)

So, per this board's suggestion, I bought an Edwin Jagger BB for my first brush. I love it as much as I can without having compared it to another brush. One thing I have been thinking lately is that I might want a bigger one.

Not sure how jumping from 22mm to 26mm is going to be. Too much of a change?

Also, I'm open to other suggestions!

If you want a big brush, I'd say do one of two things:

Get a custom Shavemac with a short loft (and D01 or Finest, not Silvertip)

Get a Two-band Simpsons Chubby 2. Best "big" brush I've ever used.

Interesting, not silvertip for a shavemac? Think I would be overpaying? How do I go about getting a custom shavemac? Direct from the company?

Wow, 28mm? That is a big brush! I hadn't thought of Simpson so I totally missed it. It's pretty pricey too, but I'm not going out to buy a new brush for a few more months, so I can save up. It's on my list now :)

I keep thinking about the Chubby now! It's such a monster! But is there that much of a difference between a 26mm and a 28mm? Of course, it's a big jump from a 22mm to a 28mm, but that's kind of what I'm looking for!

I think that Finest is just as good and cheaper, and D01 is a step up in backbone and density, so I would not recommend Silvertip.

As to how to order a custom, just go to the website to the custom section, and send them an email. Pick your favorite handle, and specify the knot size and loft height that you want. It's really the way to go, short-loft brushes are the bee's knees!

I have a 28mm silvertip from Penworks and it is NICE.

My advice is to always get something custom if you can.

Those are BIG brushes. You will be using double or triple the amount of product per shave in comparison to your 22 mm.

oh! I hadn't thought of that! I was only thinking "man, that would feel soo good!" I'm still keeping the EJ BBB so I figure if I find it uses more product than I want, then I can keep the bigger brush for "special" use and even if that doesn't happen, I can BST it :)

Ah! didn't see knot sizes in the custom section. I shall email them when I get it. The price is pretty reasonable too!

Man, no love for the rooney! Interesting :biggrin1:

I think I'm going with a custom shavemac. 26mm knot, but a shorter loft. I think that's what I'm looking for! I'll probably be scouring the BST for a chubby this time next year, but for now, the shavemac suits my wallet and my wants ... umm, i mean needs! Thanks Hunter, Jim and the rest of you for the helpful advice!
