Trouble with flair-tip SS

I use a Merkur HD almost all of the time...have been for about a year.

Recently I acquired a flair-tip SS and can not get a comfortable shave out of it. I know it is much less aggressive than an HD, but it doesn't feel like it to me.

Has anybody else experienced this or have any clue why I might be experiencing this? The SS seems to be in perfect working order.

FYI, I use Astras in both rarzors.

I think that you started with the merkur head type so the SS feels wrong/off. I did the opposite sometime back and went thru the same thing. It could be that you don't agree with the gillette head type but I'd give it a couple weeks for the transitition.

Do you have a Derby or IP Red blade to try in the SS? Since I use the SS when I want a comfortable shave, those are the blades I prefer. I routinely flip-flop between a SS and HD (and others) and don't seem to have a problem adjusting beyond the first couple of strokes. But then, I started with a 40's SS and still use it more than any other. I haven't tried a flair-tip yet so I don't know if there's a difference there.

Yes, I have some red pack personnas. I'll try them and see if there's an improvement.

The angle of attack is different between the Merkur HD and a Super Speed. From what I could tell the blade curves more in the Merkur HD. With a little more time the SS will deliver you some great shaves.

+1 on time. The different head geometry takes the same care you put in when you were first learning the HD. The good news is that learning ti opens up a whole new world of razors (fatboy, slim, krona, futur...)

Thanks, guys. I will give it the same time and patience I gave the HD.
