tried: williams VS Proraso(white)...your opinions and my review

Hi everyone...so for quite some time now, i've been using the white proraso shaving "puck" if you will and really like it..
today i was at wallyworld buying some things for the little one and found myself in the shaving isle...i saw the williams classic mug puck...i remembered using this centuries ago and said "eh, i'll give it a go..it's only a buck"...so i tried it tonight with my indian wilkinson gillettes (up to about 6 shaves and still going strong..love them)...so i started to lather and it lathered right away, more quickly then the proraso. I tried it out and it's wierd..it felt like i didn't even have any soap on my face..like it was invisible...strange..
It gave me a very good shave, i was quite surprised.
What i do like about the proraso though is the cool tingling i get while and after i shave..but for a buck for a puck...it ain't that bad...
i wanted to know, the williams has tallow...i know it's animal fat but what does it do in terms of shaving?
if you had to choose between these two soaps..what would you choose?
thanks

Proraso is better IMO...

However, do not judge a soap after 1 utilization...

Was William invisible when you looked at it? If that's the case, use more product.

Williams smells so bad that I don't let it near my shaving brushes. Proraso White is really good stuff.

I really like the scent of both :w00t:. However, I never get to smell Williams unless I'm showering with it. The white Proraso, however, is prominent amongst my various Trumper flavors.

I have both and have shaved with both. The proraso gave me WAY better lather and shaves. The Williams gave me one good shave that I can remember... tried a few more times and it was terrible. I now use it to clean old brushes and as a hand soap in my shave den.

Hey guys, ya what i did notice is that with the williams (and using the same lathering procedure)...i didn't get as thick a lather as the proraso...and yes i do like the scent of the pro. compared to the williams...i guess i will keep it as my backup soap.

Beef Tallow is mixed with Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) and water to make soap.

I have never used the Proraso soap, and I would still choose it over the Williams.

I like Proraso much more than the current Williams formula. I am curious, in Canada even at the brick and mortar stores, they sometimes carry on with older stock. Does your Williams box say Combe on it? or something else?

I'm still a newbie here and I don't have a DE razor yet but I did start using a brush and soap quite a few years ago.

I started with a sandalwood soap from the body shop and I'm pretty sure they just don't make it anymore. I loved that stuff. When it was gone I got some Williams.

It's not as good as the body shop one and it's just that simple. However it's not that bad either. I find I can get a good lather with it and I get a really nice shave out of it using Gillette Fusion cartridges.(Can't wait for the DE)

I only have two complaints about Williams.

1. It does tend to dry up a bit near the end of the shave. Recently though I've been letting the bowl sit in water for a bit as per the great advice from this board and that seems to have solved that problem.

2. The lemony smell seems to go away after 5 or 10 uses and then it just smells like unscented soap.

If you're tight on money and want a good soap to get you through the Williams is the way to go. If you have money though there are better soaps to buy. I do like the nostalgia of Williams though and that is part of the appeal for me.

When Gillette put out the fusion gel(green lettering) I loved the smell of it so I switched between that and Williams.

IMHO
Gillette = better smell
Williams = better shave

No.
For many reasons....no.

You could:

1. Grow a beard
2. Sell blood and buy some Trumpers
3. Beg at a freeway off ramp
4. Do day labor
5. Take jewelery to a pawn shop
6. Buy VDH
7. Sell fruit
8. Borrow money from relatives
9. Look for change in payphones and newspaper racks
10. Look for change in your couch
11. Recycle beer bottles
12. Etc, etc, etc

There is no need, nor a good reason, to ever use Williams.

Next time you're short on funds, PM me. I'll spot you a VDH.

  Nicely said but so untrue. Though VDH is passable, sort of, I prefer soap over deliquified shampoo so Williams is the way to go.

Williams does however need basic lathering technique by the user to show its glory....:001_tt2::001_tt2:
