TOBS sandlewood stick is a strong sent to me, and no burn.

I agree that's a bummer! You might wait a few months and try the new "Blue Proraso" It should be readily available by then. In the meantime try a tube of Musgo Real.
I had same problem with original Proraso. It was the menthol. Maybe that's what it was for you.
I face lathered with the Red so you could be right. I put the cream directly on my face and that may be part of it.Proraso red/Sandalwood Cream has no menthol, but sandalwood oil does have a similar (if generally milder) dynamic. I had the very slightest irritation from it the first time I tried it, but when I used pre-shave beforehand I didn't, so you may want to try that.
