What's new

Tried Arko today - LOVED IT!

I've been doing some DE shaving for the past few weeks and I have been reading about Arko, the good the bad and the smelly! So I was very curious and wanted to give it a shot.

A very special thanks to fellow member temjeito - He was kind enough to PIF me a stick so that I could try it. Gave it a whirl today and I loved it. When I first rubbed it on my face, i didn't know if it was going to do anything, but then when I started to work it around with the brush - it blew my mind! This stuff lathers every bit as well as everyone says. Nice and slick, plenty on the brush for 3 passes and I had a DFS. Also loved the smell. Reminded me of something from my youth, but can't quite pinpoint it. And no - not a bathroom.

I purchased the 15 stick deal on Amazon for a Christmas present to myself for my first try of Arko. At first I didn't like it too much but when I smashed it into a mug instead of using it as a shave stick I was hooked. I have a BBS this morning thanks to Arko and my Gem Featherweight. And I don't mind the smell either. When I first got the soap I wasn't sure about it but now I don't even notice it. Arko is now a regular for me.

Arko is great - the smell is just not for me - odd in some ways because I really like e.g. Tabac.

At the price Arko goes for, it would be nice if it suited me more !

The perfect joining of price and performance. And the smell, while not overwhelmingly good, is perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned. This reminds me that I need to stock up!

I tried Arko for the first time last night. To me, it kind of smells a bit like a lemon scented cleaner. Didn't bother me, though.

I actually have a few of those onn my wish list with them and I am going to get in on the Amazon case deal. Although I am interested to see when the Arko in the tub will be available for purchase.

WCS sells twist up tubes for Arko. You should give them a try.

Thanks chiliman - I may have to get in on this! Also - you have hit on what the smell reminds me of. My grandmother used to make some laundry concoction to do her white sheets. Then she would hang them out to dry - no matter the temperature. The Arko reminds me of the way the sheets smelled. A combo of soaps and detergents and fresh air.

the Arko tub is available now, check ebay => http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ARKO-SHA...CHED-LATHER-SHAVE-/190802518684#ht_1698wt_906

I love Arko and can't understand why there are haters... just can't please some people. I think it smells like laundry detergent.

I used creams almost exclusively for the first year or two of wet shaving. I tried a couple of soaps but was unimpressed. I ended up with a stick of Arko thrown in with a 100 Derby blade purchase. It ended up being my gateway drug to shaving soaps. I found it effortless to use, and the slickness and cushion were head and shoulders above any I had tried up to that point. For the past few years, I rarely use a cream, but Arko remains a regular in my line-up.

arko is good stuff. I mash mine into a small tupperware bowl and keep it there. it produces great lather and the tallow is great. slick.
i find the smell soapy. i aired my stick out for a day and nuked it with some noxema and water then it fit the bowl perfectly. sadly, left it at my grandfather's house in the caribbean. he loves it.

BubblesTGB, do you have a link for the twist up tube case on Amazon? I did a few searchs, but could not find it.

Sorry for the misleading post - when I said "wish list with them," I meant West Coast Shaving, not Amazon. I don't think Amazon has the twist up tubes.

It is said that if a traditional wet shaver lives a life that is true and pure, when the flesh fails and the spirit is called to the great Den above, that the Arko in Paradise smells like rose, sandalwood and all manner of pleasant things according to the whim of the departed, but it still lathers just as it does in this vale of tears.

'Til that happy day, we toil away in a miasma of lemon cleanser, but that very adversity is what will make the reward that follows all the sweeter.
