TOBS Creams Changing?

I have seen mumblings that TOBS creams, or at least their tub containers, may be changing. Any one have any definitive info?

The tubs are still similar to what they were, they have "Taylor of Old Bond Street" marked on the side now. The cream itself has changed, they are now paraben free.

In your opinion is this a change for the better? (I don't really care about the change to the tub.) Or can you even tell it has changed when you use the cream? I just used TOBS for the first time on Christmas Day (rose) and loved it. It was a sample, and I would hate to have just caught it before they reformulated and turned it to rubbish :001_rolle

Hi Gents, BCL501 is correct. They intend to slowly change all of the fragrances over to a paraben free formula. The first one to have the new formula was Jermyn Street, which has been out since the summer. I believe that another scent has changed over (perhaps Avocado?).

Anyway, if you would like a good opinion on the new formula you should check out the review of the Jermyn Street

IMO, I think it is an equally good formula, just w/o the parabens.

I've just recently bought a tub of Lavender (i.e. the paraben free version) from their shop in Jermyn Street. The scent has changed, its a little bit sweeter and its performance so far has been satisfactory, although not quite what one expects from a TOBS cream. The lather seems a little lighter and slicker, more soap like, and I'm not yet sure what to make of it (will need to use it more).

I hope they aren't putting cocoa butter into the avocado cream. Also, I wonder if the new avocado is still a super thick consistency like before? I really liked that and it would be a shame if they changed it.

I just got a tub of TOBS Avocado, and here is the list of ingredients: Aqua (Water), Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Acid, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Parfum (Fragrance) Sodium Hydroxide, Persea, Gratissima (Avocado Oil), Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Geranol, Citronellol.

It's the same consistency as the last I had about a year ago. I'm assuming that what I have now is the new formulation, and it remains probably the best performing cream I've used. Great, thick lather; outstanding moisturizing properties; and I love the "neutral", subtle fresh cucumber scent.

I talked to a retailer and was told that the new formula says "Parabens Free" on the bottom under the UPC code and that most scents are already this way. I was told Avocado and Almond for sure. So this is how you know if you have the "old" or "new" formula.

jeremyn street is a really nice cream for thems that haven't tried it yet.

lathers great, as TOBS generally do....

smells great, green and ferny without being overpowering or obnoxious

works great, mild without drying out the skin

a joyous experience, especially with my new EJ DE89L

Yup - I see it now; I've got the new stuff for sure.

I have TOBS for Sensitive Skin. It says paraben-free on the label. Can't speak about how it performed when it had paraben in it, but that TOBS cream is a winner in my book.

I have a tub of the paraben free Avocado that I have been using for the last couple of months. I works as well as I could want. It's a dense consistency, lathers very well and gives a great shave. I had been without the Avocado scent for a few months prior to getting this new tub but it seems to work just as well as what I had.

As a retailer, I am always concerned about 'the next new reformulation'. IMHO, TOBS got it as close as they could to the previous formula.

This cream still has a very nice scent, close to T&H Grafton maybe, right? It's not totally unscented, is it?

No, it has no scent at all. I'm referring to this one:

But TOBS has a sensitive skin that is scented, that's the Jermyn Street:

I've got to say it's kind of an oxymoron to have a scented or perfumed sensitive skin shaving cream. It is usually the scent or perfume that irritates the skin, so for a cream to qualify as being adapted for sensitive skin, it should not have any scent. But perhaps the Jerwyn Street works, never tried it.

Strange as back in August I got a sample of TOBS Sensitive that was made in front of me, so it clearly came from the tan jar labeled Sensitive and it has a light smell that I really enjoy (I still have the dirty sample jar that I sniff once in a while ) Now I don't know if it was the old or new Sensitive formula. I really hope it smells like Jermyn does and maybe it was some batch they tried before releasing Jermyn in its own black jar.

Update: I'm starting to think that maybe the cap on the jar was wrong and I got a different sample.

You seek a definitive answer here?. :001_rolle

I received a tub of TOBS Sandalwood from Phil at bullgoose just last week and it most assuredly contained parabens in its list of ingredients. It could be a case of what vendors still have in stock. Quick eveyone, buy up old stock and create yet another buying frenzy.

I talked to a retailer too and was told that the new packaging says "Parabens Free" under the UPC bar code whereas the old one didn't. So something has changed, maybe all they did is get rid of the parabens and nothing else changed. There's only 1 way to find out if the new formula has any performance changes: try it.
