Tobacquistitions for June 2013

3:30 PM on the first day of the month? Surely I am not the only person who has picked up something...

I am normally a Cigar smoker, but got a shipment in from smokingpipes.com:
- Missouri Meerschaum: Ozark Mountain Bent x2
- Frog Mortin 50g
1 ounce ea
- Mac Baren: Virginia No. 1
- Stokkebye: B & B
- Stokkebye: Black Cavendish
- Dunhill: 965

I've had an awesome 1st day of the month so far! Last night I discovered there was a pipe tobacco legend in my own backyard, so I drove to Oregon City and met Steven Books at House of Calabash today. Super great guy and a really neat shop. My understanding is that the Rich's blends were done by Mr. Books, then he opened House of Calabash a couple of years ago. I bought five 1-ounce samples, and I can't wait to try some this evening. They're certainly more expensive than anything I've purchased so far, but I have a feeling they will be well worth the little extra.. having the blends described to me by the gentleman who blended them was a treat, then more stories and information about the tobacco and some of his pipes as he weighed the tobaccos and laid down some sweet calligraphy on the labels. I even bought a beautiful 1970's James Upshall pipe from Steven's personal collection! Didn't plan on buying a pipe, but when it hit my hands, it felt like mine. What an afternoon.. I'm already looking forward to my next trip out there.

I didn't get any brown leaf-related goodies today, but I did see two Cavicchi estates on the bay for $135 OBO. I hope to see someone here posting them soon...

...so I don't.

I'm going to have to check out House of Calabash. Thanks for the tip! Definitely seems like its worth the trip to OC.

It was well worth it for me.. definitely a very different vibe than your typical B&M. There's a bit of a time travel element, for sure, which seemed a perfect fit for pipes and tobacco.

I KNEW "time travel" was possible, lol.

Nice looking Upshall, btw. Let us know how the samples taste!

Some additions to the cellar.
- 3 tins of DTM Old Ironsides
- SG Skiff Mixture and SG Squadron Leader
- 2 tins Capstan Blue

I've done my best to describe my first impressions here ..I'm not well versed in describing tobacco, so i just kinda winged it. In short, these tobaccos are amazing IMHO.

I've read nothing but great things so far about HoC blends. Thanks for the first impressions.

Stopped in at my local B&M yesterday on the way home from work to grab a tin of Solani Aged Burley Flake and had a what-the-hell moment, resulting in my first ever cigar purchase, a Casa Magna Colorado. Plan on burning it tonight as my Jays are getting thumped by the Giants in a wonderful 10:15 pm (EST) latenight interleague game. Regular sleep, alertness and productivity at work... be damned!

Also, a 4Noggins mini order arrived today:
-- 4 x 50g Escudo
-- 2 oz. Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Dark Birdseye (I'm a bit worried about this one after my experience last night with GH Dark Flake:001_unsur)

A package arrived yesterday with an old pipe in it. Dun-something, I think :001_tt2: (1965 Bruyere Group 3 53 F/T). And I got some Escudo today, too.
