Tightening Pins

What is the best way to tightening pins on a razor with ivory scales.

Other than the obvious, very carefully.

Thanks all.

carefully is the way to do it.
The pins are often without washers, other then that it is just pins.
And ivory really isn't that brittle.

So if you do the 'ol tapa-tapa with a small ball peen hammer you should be all right. Should.
There is always the odd risk of the pin being bent internally & wrecking havoc at the lightest contact with the hammer & what 100 years has done to the scales integrity & what not.
But with the scales reasonably aligned, you should be fine.

Try not to hit the scales is usually the best advice I can give. Very little pressure, just tiny taps with a small ball-peen hammer.

If it doesn't tighten perceptibly after a round of taps, or it tightens but then loosens after a few shaves the pin is likely bent. And a bent pin is only fixed by repinning.

Be careful! Maybe look really carefully for preexisting cracks.

without washers-Yep, no washers

And ivory really isn't that brittle.-True

So if you do the 'ol tapa-tapa-Thats what I did for about 15 minutes

Tiny Taps, I did not think I was doing anything at first-then...........................

There is a tiny, hairline crack present, luckily it is near the wedge, not the pivot pin

Take video.....

You know... For research/possible comedy...
I bet you look at the accidents hoping to see some gore-

OK we all do that.

So OK, I tapped, tapped, tapped for about 15 minutes, never hit the scales, minuscule pressure.

It is now tight, no damage----phew, I can breathe again.

Thanks all

Now that we know it all went well I can share this old Lump I had (and still have thinking about it) breaking a pair of pristine Heljestrand ivory scales
