Thoughts about an official Pipe Carving contest?

So this thread about pipe carving has caught our attention. What are your thoughts/interest/concerns about a group buy of a pipe-carving kit and then a judged contest with a B&B branded prize?

If we can get a big enough response, I think we would shoot for the contest to kick off after the New Year (after Secret Santa and before the penny-saving starts for a hypothetical '14 LE Pipe :biggrin1:)

Let's hear it!

I'd love to be in, but I don't have a workshop, tools, skills. Plus I am in the UK so it would be expensive to get the kit over to me.

Sand paper and a set of files are all that is needed to carve a pipe. Literally less than$15 worth of tools can craft a beautiful pipe. The kits would already be drilled, and Tinsky is the proposed source for the kits. I know he will ship anywhere, and we have a relationship with him that hopefully translates to a nice discount.

See guys? I don't Jason could make this any easier if he tried (and I think he is :tongue_sm)

In that case I am in, if we could also have a list of the basic tools needed? I wouldn't know what file, polish etc.. necessary

I'm in. This is a great idea. There's been a lot of discussion about a contest or pipe carving contest, in the past. would love to see this go through. Heck, depending on the price, I might get two in case I screw one of them up ( which I probably will LOL ).

Something else just hit me, again depending on the price. What if we each get two, make one for the contest then have a tutorial thread where we all make the same style pipe, with pics and steps throughout the thread, then either sell or auction off the tutorial pipes for charity. We could make them a limited edition thing where we number them and only make that style once.

Sure, all in good time. This is still just an idea yet. Basically 120 grit sand paper and a course metal file for the forming of the shape, then varying finer grits for finishing. An inexpensive finish is simply to polish with 0000 steel wool, it brings out the grain and has a lovely natural briar look, because it is.

It all depends on the interest and commitment, but certainly a possibility.

I think this is very doable. There are quite a few selections on his site already and most of them are very reasonably priced. If we can get some sort of B&B starter kit, we might even be able to get a better deal thus making it easier to buy a couple :)
