What's new

This is how "I" smell

I've been participating in a thread in which I've been trying to track down a new scent to complement my favorite and standard, Eau Sauvage. Something struck me as I was testing the various suggestions;

Initially I thought I was just looking for a scent that I "liked". As I progressed, I realized that their were certain scents that smelled ok, but didn't resonate with me, but that those few that truly resonated did so on a deeper level than just a pleasant scent that appealed to me. What occurred to me was that I wasn't actually looking to wear a scent that said, "hey, here's something I think smells good," I was looking for something that said "hey, you may not know me but that scent you're smelling? If my personality had a scent, sometimes it would smell like this."

This is what "I" smell like. Sometimes I don't wear any scent, when I want to move through the world in my own space and be left to myself. But sometimes I want to announce my presence and give people a little heads up as to what I'm about, and the right scent is an incredible way to do that. Scent is so strongly connected to the deepest centers of our brains, it's incredible what it unlocks and the connections that it makes, all on its own. It's very exciting when you hit upon a fragrance that makes this click for you.

The right tshirt, the right collar, the right hat, the right song, the right boots, the right scent... These are all attempts to solidify and communicate our identity in an increasingly crowded, anonymous, generic, cookie cutter world.

I know who I am.

I am not my fragrance, but this is what "I" smell like.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Hope this wasn't too rambling, this realization just got me fired up for the day and I hoped if I shared it, I could pass along the good vibe.:001_smile

Great post, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I agree with you in that I have dozens of scents that I love but my 2 favorites so far just hit me on another level that feels completely right. These 2 happen to be Encre Noire and Sycomore.

Nice post, GrimmFu! There are a few fragrances that I connect with and I would describe them as how I smell. Guerlain Vetiver, Rive Gauche pour homme, and Dior Eau Sauvage.

Excellent post, GrimmFu! I, too, think the reason why each of us likes a scent, or rather as you've described it why a scent "resonates" with us, and lets us say "this is what I smell like", is based on such a complex set of factors it's not really possible for us to identify or understand all the reasons. And I'm sure it comes from the collective whole of our entire life's experiences. It is interesting to consider how, just as we select different clothes to wear for different occasions but always to reflect who we are, we can also select a different scent to project ourselves differently through scent. Good stuff!

I couldn't have worded this better myself. I don't have much experience with fragrances but of the few I've tried, GIT, Guerlain Vetiver, & Eau de L'Occitan are the ones I've connected with the most so far.

Brilliantly, expertly, magnificently worded! Almost a manifesto towards the end, BRAVO!

Great post. Very well put. It should be a fun kind of adventure to track down the scents that best convey but you want them to convey about you. Thanks for this.

What a deep well thought out post

I feel like you do, only because I'm a frag head nut case with over 300 bottlers in my personal collection (no decants and no samples) I always change my scent of the day - but sometimes I do feel like not wearing any scent, so these days I just put on a light inoffensive frag and spray only 3-4 sprays below the chest area.

I will never have a signature scent, but I change scent depending on my mood, for how long I have to work that day (I often work 12 hours straight). Also change frag depending on the weather.....
As you say, scent is touching our senses and brain in ways we can't really perceive and totally understand, wearing a scent often can help me start a day in a fresher way, where my mood is down in the basement and help me lift it up a bit :thumbup1:

How do you even go about choosing one in the morning when you have 300? Where do you store all of them? You should post a pic!
