Thinking of trying a Parker Shavette as my first Straight

Hey everybody! It's been a long time since I've posted, but now I'm back looking to change up my rotation a bit.

Now that I think I've mastered using a DE, I'd like to try a straight, but before investing I'd like to try a Shavette before I jump into the investment of a real straight, hone, and strop.

I read some reviews on Parker Straights, and I think for the low price it might be worth it to try.

The only problem is, is I can't decide on one! Below are pictures I found online.

I'm thinking a Stainless steel might be worth it for the future and it looks good, but I also like the black, but I'm thinking maybe the black is plastic, and less heavier and might be less reliable?

Can anyone provide some insight on these?

Thanks!, Chrislols

You'll find the stainless model to be a bit heavier than the black one, I have both and I like them. But look on ebay or just type in Parker straights, and you'll see the SRW. This razor is a bit smaller that the other 2, but I like it the best of my Parkers. Its very easy to use and move around your face. You'll find it to be lighter that the other 2 also.

I only use disposable blade straights and I find that SRW to be the best of the 3 Parkers. Of course with any open blade razor the learning curve is a bit steep. So stay off the pressure, watch your angle's, and just do the easy parts of your face at first. There's nothing wrong at all in using any of the Parker's. :thumbup1:

I appreciate your insight on this! While I can imagine the learning curve is steep, I do like the Stainless Steel Parker, but only for the weight. I think in the long run I'd appreciate the black, opposed to the SRW being white.

I read that at Sally;s they have a Fromm Hair Shaper, I picked one up for around $4.00. So I'm going to give it a few go's, if I enjoy it, I'm definitely going to go for the SRB.

Thanks again, and I'd appreciate anyone else's mini reviews!

I have the black handled Parker Shavette, and very much enjoy using it. It is much better built than the chintzy Dovo Shavette. It has a decent amount of weight behind it as well.

It's a solid buy; just expect to have a decent amount of cuts when you start out shaving with it. Watch the angle, and as Paul said totally watch the pressure (it's easy to get razor burn with a straight).

I have shaved with a Fromm as well.

The biggest issue, is to watch the ends of the blade. The Fromm effectively has two spike points on it (one on each end of the blade), and they can nick you quite well if you are not careful.
