Thinking of a tech

Thinking about the tech
I have been thinking of getting a tech razor, I am not Quite sure witch one yet.

Why a tech?
1. I would like a mild three part razor, mostly for travel. Three peace razors to not arouse the TSA's curiosity if taken apart.

2. It is a razor that was in production for a long time so it will be easy to get and not to expensive to replace If lost.
so Plentiful and cheap

3.I really want to try one.

so how much should I pay for a tech ?
What tech to get. (yes I know all of them, witch one do I get first?)

I have a ball end tech, from the early 1960's. I paid $20 for it a couple of months ago and it's in excellent condition. It's a great razor that I use almost every day.

I have a Canadian fat handle tech and it is hands down one of my favorites. It will give a nice close comfortable shave every time, no matter how sleepy/hungover/in a rush I am that morning...always excellent. Highly recommend the fat handle...they are plentiful and cheap too, I would say 10-15$ for a decent one without a case is fair.

I have a ball end English Tech. Apparently they are more aggressive than American ones and I have to say I don't think of it as mild at all. I think a Tech is a great purchase for anybody, smooth irritation free shave every time.

I cut my razors down to just 3 about 2 months ago and my Tech is one of them, that says it all.

I bought a prewar Fat Handled Tech (triangular holes) in great shape with a very nice/newish extra handle for $15/shipped on the B/S/T. I think that was an exceptional deal, though. I'd guess the handle itself is worth at least that.

That Tech is the closest thing to "plug and play" as any DE I have used. Any blade is fine, never a bad shave.

When I moved from DE to straights, the only razor I kept was my little aluminium tech. Theyre awesome razors that dont get nearly as much praise as they deserve.

Luckily for you, this translates to them being super cheap. Have a poke around the BST, there is generally one for sale at any given point in time.

I don't know if you have any antique places where you live but I've picked up several for anywhere from $2-$8. Because they are three pieces they are easy to clean. The nickel ones Seem to be extra tough because they always shine up like new.

+1 for the following:

1) fat handle is best
2) pre-war Tech with the triangular slots is better (more efficient)
3) If you can find a Canadian one for a decent price, do it

Expect to pay $15-30 for a Tech in good to outstanding condition. Worth every penny.

I'd vote for a pre-war Tech with the fat handle, replated by Krona Kruiser or (for me) sent off for gold replating. I haven't tried the prewar, but postwar was not as efficient as my News.

The fat handle both looks incredibly cool and also grips well. My favorite handle currently. The only other possibilities are a UFO or a vintage ABC pocket razor handle, Empire edition.

Techs in this order: (desirable, IMO)

1. English travel tech. The handle comes in two pieces. $40
2. Made in Canada 1932 $25
3. Pre-war Triangular holes $10-$30

Any one of the three will deliver outstanding shaves.

I'm new to all this, but I found a pristine '66 travel tech set and an ugly duckling prewar tech on Ebay (separately) for under $10 each. So they definitely can be got cheaply. I'm still experimenting, but thus far I like the prewar tech a bit better.

I have a Travel Tech and want to confirm it's age: It has A2 under the head and my research shows it is a 1930 or a 1955 model made in the 2nd quarter. Anyone which year is correct? Here are some pics. Haven't cleaned it up yet, but will be soon so it can be put up for sale.

I think the Techs with their almost elegant simplicity of design too often get dismissed as a starter razor.

+1

I was one of these...when I started I went for anything but the simple 3 piece tech...like in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade...the bad guy chooses the shiny gold encrusted cup...Indy chooses the simple wooden cup...:) The Tech's I have are my everyday shavers and seldom reach for anything else...they just seem to work.

I've bought Techs from members for 10-15 bucks...all in great shape. My preference is the Canadian fat handle, D slot.

I've have several Techs, mostly ball end handles. I like their simplicity and shave. I haven't noticed a a real difference in the performance of the straight or triangle openings in the base plates.
That being said, when I do a den clearing sale, the one I'll keep is the fat handled Tech. To me, it has the best grip and balance.
