What's new

There is something about that brush.....

Many of us, at one time or another, pick up a second brush (or third, fourth, fifth....). After awhile, we develop our preferences, and there is that one in the cabinet that we instinctively reach for. Think about your favorite. What is it about that brush that makes it your go to brush?

Semogue Excelsior 2009 Limited Edition Boar.

It's big, dense and stiff, but the tips are well broken in and gentle on the face. I can be stingy and load just enough for a two pass shave. Or, I can load it like the monster it is, similar to those (boar) lathering tutorials you see around the board and Youtube, just destroying pucks of soap. I've broken the brush in well, and it hasn't let me down since.

Too bad there are only so many of them to go around.

My 2-band Tulip 2 was my go to "perfect" brush. I liked everything about this brush - the ergonomics of the handle, the flat lip that kept lather off the handle, the firmness of the hair, the perfect mix between dense and flow though, the beautiful snow white tips contrasting against the jet black "roots", no third color band peeking out of the bottom, the loft height and knot diameter were spot on. Oh I miss it so. Alas, it was a shedder.

Of all my current brushes there is one thing about each that is not 100% perfect, but each one is more than fabulous :thumbup1: The Duke is a bit too strichy, the Eagle is a bit too dense, the Colonel handle shape isn't my all time favorite, and the Semogue LE loft is too tall.

It's my B&B LE 2008. Small, dense and very soft on the face but great for face lathering. Only reason I use other brushes is so I don't wear it out.

I am lucky enough to have some wonderful brushes and my "go to" brush at the moment is the B+B Eagle. I find that it's performance is great and I love what it stands for. I have a Rooney 1/2 and a new Chubby2 which will both be weekend brushes (I am in a rush during the week and like to shave with a smaller brush), my Duke2 alternates with the Eagle, my Case in Pure Badger is a great scrubby little soap brush and the Wee Scot is perfect for when I want to have a quick one-pass shave with my straight.

This may seem odd, but the thing that makes me reach for a brush is a good solid handle. I love dense knots with soft tips, but I can overlook a floppier knot (Milk Churn) if the handle is good. I dislike the Keyhole because the brush is on the floppy side AND the handle feels insubstantial (looks great, though).

My Simpson's Polo 8. I'm not certain what grade of badger it is, but the handle is the perfect size--weight and length--and perfect balance for me. Also, the knot is the exact balance of soft and backbone that makes this ideal with soaps and creams alike.

I used to think I had used a good brush before, then I got this one.......

My Penworks pine wood handle badger brush.
It's big and soft and I know exactly how much water it holds and the handle is smooth and was just made for my hand.
It's my baby.

I have a distinct pattern of falling in love with a brush and then growing quite indifferent with it sooner or later. The Vulfix/Simpson/BullGoose Grosvenor 2 Band Super Badger would be dearest currently.... But I'm always looking...

I have an odd vintage Simpson - M7 (or W7, maybe) reknotted with TGN fabulosa... the handle appears to be a hybrid Emperor/Tulip. That's probably it.

...except y'all got me on this boar kick now, and my newest - Semogue 1305 - is getting a lot of face time.

But the B&B LE 2008 & B&B Jessica Rabbit are both right up there.

...and then there's - dangit!

I don't know... I guess I'm with AntiqueHoosier on this one. (I think I have three of his exes right now.)

That M7 is the best looking handle I have seen :thumbup1:

That one is very attractive but my nod for best handle would be that Genuine Ivory one that a member snagged that recalled the Rooney Vicorian-esque qualities... I'd search for a pic but I'm on my iPhone...

Vie-long Horse Pro. : it is a cheap and simple brush, not the softest but still soft enough, but it creates a great lather in no time, and doesn't keep all that lather for itself. It is a great everyday brush.
Sometimes when I want a really soft brush I reach for my Mühle silvertip 23mm, which is really soft and luxurious.

Coming soon: a handmade wooden handled finest made by one of our famous Dutch members...
