The ultimate tools of the trade...

These are my ultimate tools of the trade!
1) Santa Maria Novella, shaving cream. No need to talk scents when discussing shaving soaps, it's all about performance. This cream does not lather abundantly, drowning your dish/container in overflowing lather. The lather that SMN produces is the densest of them all. Once lathered up, you will not see any hit of skin through the lather and more than enough soap remains in your brush for a second pass. I understand that a good lather can make your soap more comfortable but this one goes further: it gives you a closer shave. How that's possible I don't know. Ask the shaving fairy... (I have Tabac, MDC (Originale/Agrume) and Proraso (White/Green) in my den but this one beats all of these...
2) Semogue SOC Badger. A more recent purchase. But I haven't used any other brush since, from it's first shave. It's light and it's precise. It only deposits lather on the skin, not on the floor or the ceiling ;-). I haven't tried the resin siblings of this brush but I kind of like it that the point of gravity seems to be on the brush side rather than on the handle side.
3) Fatip open comb. I have 5 of these. Enough said.
4) Willy's blade. The mystery of razor blades. Willy's are magic. They work from the first shave and I only replace them after what 8 or 10 shaves? I haven't found anything that even matches the performance of these blades. I tried the Wizamet Iridiums and while they are quite good the first shave, I get small nicks on the second or third shave. I understand Willy's went out of business during covid but they're still available if you look for them...
5) Proraso Green After Shave. Not in the picture and it almost feels like sacrilege... No shave is finished without a splash of good old alcoholic after shave, and the Proraso is one of the best! I hate balms, it always feels like I start sweating under a layer of balm.

Great list!

Some potential suggestions (from my den):
Razor: Wolfman
Blades: GSB, Polsilver SI (perhaps the same as Wizamet), Astra SP, Personna red, Personna lab
Brushes: Shavemac and Rudy Vey
Soaps: Haslinger, MWF (’tallow’)
Splash: Speick, Floid

So many great options!! :thumbup1::thumbup1:

The Speick and Floid splashes are two I'd like to try out. They've been in and out of my Amazon basket ;-), the MWF is a failure to me (too quickly dissipating lather)

My suggestions;

Razor: Blackland Blackbird Ti
Soap: Tabac, Haslinger
Brush: Omega 621 Silvertip
AS: Cella RED, Tabac Craftsman
Blade: GP, GSB,
What type of AS is Tabac Craftsman scentwise? Less flowery than the original? I believe the regular Tabac splash is quite good for the skin but the scent is a little strong to my liking... My Tabac soap is finishing. That's one of the soaps I would strongly consider to replace. (I haven't read too much bad stuff about the new formula. However my experience with vegan soaps is very good–I actually thin their performance overall is better-so I'm not to worried about that!)

As per my humble opinion Bergamot-Lavender-Vetiver and Leather are more dominant.

The Original is like the soap "grand ma purse" scented which I like very much.

On the other hand, Tabac Craftsman is more masculine and ageless scent you can use whether you are twenty or seventy.

Good, I fall within that range ;-)

Scent profiles are complicated. Original Tabac is also supposed to have pepper and lavender. I probably have a different batch or a different nose. I do prefer scents that are straightforward and simple with one big, overarching scent. And that should not be patchouli (youth trauma ;-)

Razor: ATT Windsor SSRH
Blade: Schlick Double Edge (Germany)
Brush: Simpson Duke 3 Best
Soap: MdC any flavor
AS: Pitralon Classic
Balm: Barts any flavor

Razor: 1/4 hollow, currently prefer either Riga or Koraat.

Brush: Mühle silvertip, Shavemac silvertip or silvertip two band

Soap: Officina Artigiana Milano (a recent discovery and currently my favorite soap), SV, A&E (preferably Kaizen) or MWF tallow.

After shave: unfortunately, all I can use is diluted glycerine. I miss the initial feel of a good alcohol after shave.

Scent: GFT Sandalwood, Havana or Eucris (EDP), Officina Artigiana Milano “Stay Traditional” after shave. Yep, this after shave is stronger than some EDT and is competing with some perfumes.

Music: Bill Evans, Arvo Pärt, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd or David Gilmour.

Day of the week: Saturday or Sunday, so I have plenty of time to relax.

Girls call me Makaluod
Razor: Gold Dollar 66 (modified)
Soap: Palmolive stick (Germany)
Brush: Chinese generic synthetic
Strop: Chinese generic 62mm calf hide
Aftershave: Private blend 20% Dickinson witch hazel 80% Wahal bay rum
Blade Maintenance: 0.1μm diamond pasted balsa strop

That's all a man needs for a perfect shave once or more times each day.

So far after about a year of non-cart shaving, including various inexpenisve razors, 6-7 soaps/creams and a dozen blades:

Razor: Twig
Blade: Bic Chrome Platinum
Brush: No brush, hand applied vigorously
Cream: Proraso Blue
Aftershave: Nothing and still glassfaced, but sometimes a bit of 95% aloe gel for fun.

Quite a few more things in the pipeline, so who knows what the future brings. But the above shave is rapido, rico y suave!

Lather: Stirling Bay Rum
Razor: Wolfman WR1 SS SB.74

Aftershave: Stirling Bay Rum aftershave splash and edt

This is my five-star setup.

I’ve got a cherry SOC boar that’s aging. I grabbed a butterscotch replacement. You’re assumption is right, it’s way too heavy by far comparatively. It got shelved after a short break in routine. Then I picked up a Zenith 2000 C XSE. It’s ridiculously phenomenal. It immediately became my primary.

That SOC 2-band? Perfection and you don’t need to look at other badgers if it’s your first. You’ll just spend more money for similar or marginally better performance if you’re currently content with the SOC’s density and backbone. And I’m a face latherer.

Some Fine shaving products and reasonably affordable IMO!

Razor : Star bar #4 lather catcher- Mfg 1919-20, tame mid range. Works well with a new Gem PTFE blade.
Blade : Gem Personna SS PTFE, very sharp, great longevity, smooths out nicely, predictable + safest blade to handle.
Soap : Razorock The Dead Sea, nice unique scent(addicting) with excellent lather qualities. You get your money's worth IMO.
Brush : Yaqi "Casino clubs" 26mm timber wolf knot, checks all the boxes for a great shave. 1 of 10 only made from Yaqi(not the common 26mm Husky knot). Marketing test brush I think marked as defect handle $10 Canadian, just lucky with this one.
Pre shave : (Dedicated Cashmere synthetic)Brush wash whole face with CeraVe hand bar cleanser with a dollop of clear Aloe Vera on the cleaned beard area.
Prep : Cold water rinse after each pass of 2 + pickups. WTG + ATG + pickups.
Post shave : Razorock The Dead Sea aftershave + a dollop of CeraVe moisturizing lotion(scentless).CeraVe makes great stuff.
Results : 1-10 dial - Copy (2) 1 10.545 1.jpg or CCS,DFS,BBS + no irritation + no weepers=:a17: Star Bar #4 lather catcher with a Gem fresh blade =Some fine shaving IMO. (It does not get much better for shaving tools & software for myself.)
Some nice shaving tools IMO..jpg

Have some great shaves!

Like most here, I have lots of razors, soaps, brushes, aftershaves, etc, but I have the most satisfactory/enjoyable shaves with the following items.

Razor: Blackbird Ti SB
Soap: Ogallala Bay Rum Limes and Peppercorn
AS: Ogallala Bay Rum Limes and Peppercorn
Brush: Rudy Vey STF 25mm
Blade: Gillette Platinum (dark blue box w/ white letters)

I have a few other razors, brushes, soaps, AS that also provide great shaves and love using them, but everytime I use the above pairings, I have a wonderful shave.

Boy, tough one as I really enjoy the variety, but if I had to do one setup:
Razor: Timeless Ti SB .68
Soap: Zingari Man The Magician
AS: Pinaud Clubman
Brush: Rudy Vey 2018 Contributor
Blade: Personna Med Prep

The right tools, with the right skills will give you consistent results and hopefully a smile.
