The Ugly Duckling - A Fatboy Restoration

I managed to score a pretty distressed looking 1961 Gillette Fatboy on the bay last week. When everyone else saw a lost cause, I saw potential. When everyone else clicked next, intent on buying the prettiest, shiniest Fatboy, I paused and admired her inner beauty and managed to look beyond the rough, homely exterior. I quickly pressed Buy it Now, and adopted this ugly duckling at a smashingly low price!

Well she arrived today and I went immediately to work. I started with a baking soda/hot water bath, then scrubbing bubbles, then another bath, then some Bartender's friend, a third and final bath, and then some Maas and elbow grease. She cleaned up nice. There is some brassing on the lower handle, and small scratches throughout the body including on the silo doors.

I am pleased with the finished result. This old beauty is ready to bop and stroll.

What do you guys think?

wow - the 'after' pic looks like a razor that could be sold at 2~3x your purchased price (I'm guessing you got it dirt cheap)

That's the great thing about these vintage Gillettes, no matter how bad they look, a little elbow grease, Scrubbing Bubbles, and MAAS almost always gets them looking brand new again. It works out great for us, as the untrained eye sees a dirty, nasty old razor, which means we can get it on the cheap a lot of times!

Looks great! How much did you score it for?

It was a "Buy It Now" for 14 bucks! I'm quite sure the seller didn't know the value of it or that it was a Fatboy. He listed it as a Gillette Adjustable.

Thanks for the kind words gents. I am torn between whether I want to send it out to be plated in Rhodium and then keeping it as a daily shaver or PIFing it here on B and B. :)
