What's new

The toughest, most durable duffel/weekender bag you've had?

What is the most durable duffel bag or weekender type bag you've had?
I came into owning a Red Oxx Safari-Beanos PR5 Medium Duffel from my father's estate.

It is a wonderful bag. I can stuff it to the maximum and toss it off the roof (and I may just do that for fun).
I've never seen such an over-engineered bag. A tad on the heavy side, but that makes sense considering it's construction.

This prompted me to wonder what other bags might be in contention for the "toughest bag out there" award.

1:- Ex Army kit bag, 50 approx years in my possession, army surplus, prior to that dunno, so how old? can't kill it, yet.
2:- Ex Airforce kit bag, much larger bag, probably 40 year old? Again can't kill it.
3:- Ex Commercial Laundry laundry bag, 30 year old? It is probably killible but gets less rough treatment than the other two do.
4:- No I do not iron anything! :scared:

yeah, a Milspec aviator's kit bag or duffel bag are hard to wear out, excepting some of the hardware/grommets failing usually do to heavy weights. not remotely water resistant.

my RedOxx Air Boss looks no different than when I bought it.... 15 yrs ago?

Red Oxx is definitely well made to the point of being over engineered. So is much vintage “army surplus”

1000d Cordura fabrics and YKK zippers, bar tacking, finished internal seems all indicate a quality bag.

Tom Bihn makes good bags, especially if one is looking for something colorful. In general, I think most bag makers who use ballistic nylon or Cordura along with good quality zippers should hold up for a long time.

More than a decade ago I bought a "book bag" style backpack from Walmart that was on clearance after school had started. I used it for many trips and adventures. The fabric finally started to fry and come apart around the top zipper after being overstuffed one too many times. It was not a high-quality bag, but it highlighted that even some of the lighter weight fabrics such as Halcyon should hold up for a long time. That unless one abuses a bag made with a medium-to-heavy duty fabric, they should all last for a very long time.

My Filson medium duffel (left) has been a real trooper for the last 15 years. Barely a mark on them!
