The No Christmas club

For a while some gentle men with whom I was acquainted had what we called the "No Christmas club."

We did not ask any questions as to why some one was there, or why he had come to spend Christmas with us.

news of the club spread by word of mouth and rumor.

We all got together and did Not Christmas things on Christmas evening or morning.

There were only a few unspoken rules, no gift giving, no mentioning Christmas, no trying to cheer any one up.

One of the members worked at a bowling ally. So at his suggestion we all went bowling one Christmas evening.
The only staff there was him as far as i know, you had to get the shoes yourself from behind the counter and put the money into the jar based on the honour system.
food chort was closed, If you wanted a beer or anything you had to go and find someplace that was open.
The only advantage was that playing was a flat fee for the night.
and bowl we did frame after frame after frame.

One morning I was called by a member who told me to get all my dirty laundry together, Because He had found a 24 hour coin operated Laundry.
He figured that Christmas morning no one would be doing laundry. There will be plenty of machines free.
What could be less Christmasy than doing laundry? So grabbing all the dirty laundry and stuffing it into sports bag I headed off to the laundry.

There were plenty of other fellows there doing laundry and getting in each others way.
Funny thing I started looking forward to the gatherings.

MementoMori This was a gathering of men who for some reason did not have family or Friends to spend Christmas with, or men who did not want Christmas cheer crammed down there throat's.

They simply started gathering to keep each other company but did not force a Christmas theme on one another.

over the years there were a number of activities.

I posted this for those who might feel the same.

If you were in Chicago, I'd ask to join. Not being religious or having much family, I never know what to do with myself on Christmas. TV and radio are too holiday-related. I'm not a big movie-goer so that option doesn't appeal to me. I usually end up eating Chinese food, in the stereotype established by my New York Jewish ancestors.

Oh, going to the movies has become one of our Christmas traditions.
It's peaceful.. kids crying and fighting. The guy behind me cussing his girlfriend on the tele. The teens in the back throwing popcorn. The flustered young mother digging in her luggage sized purse for the candy that doesn't cost $47 a box. Christmas spirit indeed!

i dont like all the traditions associated with it. i get the religious aspect and respect that. but what puts me in the Scrooge mode is pretending i care about these people that only make an effort to be my family one time per year. come on!!! quit being fake. i always leave with the snide "see you next Christmas!" comment.

Sounds like a modern-day version of the Diogenes Club.

You could start your own version of the club, it originally started
before the internet, So you had to know some one.

Interesting concept.
I have a friend that worked at a movie theater many years ago.
He always said that Christmas was a very busy day.
