What's new

The Morning Gym

Greetings friends-

My daily routine starts at the gym, where I shower, shave, and head off to work. Now that I have been introduced to the wonders of DE shaving, my routine is all wrong. I've been skipping the gym every other morning to accomodate time and such to shave at home with my new full arsenal of gear, which means I have to make up for it after work, which I'm not fond of.

To those who go to the gym every morning- what do you do? I've never seen someone bowl lathering at the gym, and I don't particularly want to blaze that trail.

Regards,
marmot

I usually shave in the evening. I find it helps me relax and wind down for the night.

If you don't want to blaze the bowl lathering trail, there is always face lathering.

i now it's a bit dumb for me to think this, but if i shave at the gym (which i have never done btw) something about the gym atmosphere (sweat and stuff) and my pores being open, doesn't seem that interesting to me.

I got too much on an audience shaving at the gym (straights). I work from home, so I just quickly rinse at the gym now, and return home for a liesurely, question free shower and shave.

I was shaving at the gym for a while with a small badger brush and a tin of Pre de Provence shaving soap, which is great for travel. No one bothered me really.

Guess I'll have to start shaving in the evening. Also, if I ding up my face or get irritated, I guess that gives my face time to recover before getting to the office. Any other tips though would be appreciated.

Marmot,

The evening shave/wind down routine is a nice balance. Kind of the Yin to the Yang of the gym in the morning! Be happy, and be well!!

I built a home gym years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did. A cable machine, a multi use bench, a nice dumbbell set and a treadmill. Outside of that I bike ride and swim. No driving, waiting, sharing (equipment and germs) etc...

If you just worked out, and are taking a hot shower, your pores will be open anyway. Seems like an optimal time to get a good, albeit probably quick, shave in. I pack my travel dopp kit which includes:

- travel sized tube of C.O. Bigelow (Old formula Proraso)
- travel friendly small bottle of AV Classic Blue
- travel styptic
- vintage 4 piece Apollo travel razor
- Omega 11047 ($13+shipping) badger/boar mixed, for face lathering - You could do the silvertip version, Omega 599, for $40+shipping.

I would like to do this in my basement. How large of a room is ideal for that kind of setup?

I get absoultely nauseous when I see someone shaving in the lockeroom at the gym. So gross - espeically when you go to wash your hands in a sink and see that someone has failed to rinse down their stubble.

With the high volume of traffic gym bathrooms see during the day, I don't understand how anyone could see this as a sanitary place to shave.

A travel brush, a shave stick face lathered and a DE razor could be a fine solution.

I built myself a home gym as well...not because of switching to DE shaving, but the gym was just out of the way and I hated if I couldn't get on a piece of equipment. It was also inefficient to use a piece of equipment, wipe it down, use another piece, wipe it down, etc. I use all my stuff at home and wipe it down when I'm done...or not lol. Dumbells, elliptical, Smith Machine & bench, et al.

If you want to stay with the gym, I would face lather. I've only been shaving for a few months and experimenting with creams, soaps, technique and all and so far I prefer face lathering with soap & brush. Or shave at night assuming your beard doesn't grow really quickly. I've shaved at night a few times when I had to be up & out really early and it is incredibly relaxing.

Never shave in the gym myself, but I don't go in the mornings - I go after work (self-employed, can set own hours, start very early on gym days).

Truth be told, never seen anyone shaving in the gym either, and have been involved with several. I would feel odd doing so (Ireland here - cultural thing ?)

I endorse evening shaving. Locker rooms just seem dirty to me. I've always thought they were dirty and don't want to spend anymore time in there than necessary.

I do the shave the night before as well as I get up early enough to go to work - I don't want to get up earlier.
