The Joys of Suburban Living

I got a woodpecker who likes to go to town on the tree next to my window. Apparently, 5-6 AM is when the pecking is best. I don't know whether it's mating season but blue jays and orioles make the ghastliest of sounds. It's like somebody is being tortured. It's a curious coincidence that I'm a Yankees fan. Twice in the last two weeks I've had to avoid deer on the roads. Cats keep bringing dead crows to my patio to feast on later. Once done eating, they serenade me with Don Giovanni in meow minor like drunkards singing folk songs at closing time. Worst of all, groundhogs have taken residence under a few trees. Take a peek outside and it's like meerkat manor in the yard.

But, hey, the air is pretty clean and I never have to pay for parking. :001_rolle

i'm still in the city but live on the border of 2 suburbs. i've also got woodpeckers at our window and they're digging out a nice little hole in the window frame. to date i've found 2 dead squirrels and a partially eaten bird on my sidewalk and don't get me started on the rabbits. the robins are out in full force but i've spotted quite a few cardinals in our midst. there's also the multitude of turtles that like to sunbathe at the lake by my house. still, it beats living in the heart of the city

At least you don't have to worry about coyotes. They were a problem in my neighborhood a couple of years ago. We're on the fringes of the country...urban sprawl at work, I guess. Scary to think you might run into a coyote on a late night/early morning walk.

Personally, I prefer the sound of wildlife than the sound of the city.

Oh no, Raccoons!!!

They come down from the hills in the storm drains, like it was a critter highway. They tear up my pond plants and try to snag my koi (well, shebunkin).

Worst of all, they tussle with my 17 pound Boston Terrier and keep me awake at night!

Fie on the raccoons! Fie I say!

Roger

there's a dead racoon floating belly up in the lake by my house. I wonder if someone ran him over and chucked in the water? a neighbor said they once say a racoon in the neighborhood that was as big as a dog

Hang some red sox out to dry on your clothesline and you will swear that you are living in hell!

I've seen some big-*** raccoons. Those are some scary buggers. I've kinda been spooked by them ever since rabid ones plagued summer camp one year. They make this deranged, sickly panting that sounds like wheezing death. ugghhh...

Coyotes ain't just for you westerners anymore. We've got scores of them up here in Massachusetts. I've seen two of them on different occasions right here in my little burb ten miles west of Boston.

Maybe I'm a masochist, but I love the sound of woodpeckers and other early-morning birdcalls. Where I am, about 10 miles west of Boston, you can nearly always hear a mockingbird start wailing around 4:30-5:00 in the morning. When one starts, the others around the neighborhood all follow. But I find it all very comforting.

I like the sound of birds in the morning too, so long as the woodpeckers aren't pecking my house i'm fine with it. well, except crows. I hate the sound of crows

Wow, Jeff. I had not realized that coyotes had pushed that far east (and north). Watch out for your dogs or cats, if you have any.

That's what u get in the burbs...... I live in the city(if you can call Hagerstown,Md that) and Ihave birds that start singing @ 130 a.m. as if they've been out clubbing!

Did the ACME Corporation open a Boston office?

yep-but it keeps getting demolished by a wrecking ball!
